Guzzi claimed the design of the mk3 Lemans fairing parts, developed from their wind tunnel, induced downforce. That was way back in 81. I've never been convinced it was anything other than marketing hype, but maybe they were on to something. The video goes to show, if you try and introduce regulations to outlaw something, that clever designers will inevitably fiind solutions that fit those rules. The new downforce fairing looks less visually odd than last seasons sticky out aerofoils IMO.
Look at tyrell with the 6 wheeled f1 car https://www.wired.com/2014/12/well-didnt-work-crazy-plan-bring-6-wheeled-cars-f1/ or the 1978 lotus 79 with the skirts that sucked the car to the ground http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2007/02/22/banned-brabham-alfa-romeo-bt46b-fan-car/
That's why aerodynamicists are amongst the highest paid employees of most F1 teams. Pioneers such as Colin Chapman, were ahead of their time until the rest of the world caught up.
