Ducati Virgin's 999 - First Impression

  1. 1) WOW! Everything I hoped it would be and my fears were unfounded.

    2) It reminds me so much of a combination of my previous bikes - a Triumph Daytona 675 and, my first ever Sports Bike of 35 years ago (!) a Moto Guzzi Le Mans Mk2... only much, much faster. I think it's the long low stance and flickability that is so resonant.

    3) It's 140bhp is a healthy 14bhp uplift on my D675 yet the bike doesn't seem frightening on intimidating... of course I know it is laughing at my puny attempts to pilot it yet things will improve...power is usable and cornering is fantastic.

    4) Heavy traffic work is no problem - yes the heat rises but none of the low speed lumpiness I feared - It's rapier thin profile is ideal for cutting through traffic.

    Now some other observations.

Having suffered Magneti Marrelli on several 70's and 80's Moto Guzzis in my youth I was expecting the worst. If Lucas is the Prince of Darkness then MM is the Angel of Death (dead batteries that is ).

But no - no obvious problems but there is a certain 'flakiness' about the way the dash lights up that seems concerning. Mostly the start sequence doesn't inspire confidence.

    My friends late model Monster 1100 has the same servo start. It soumds like this;

    GerrrchuggachuggachugggaBrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrm on start ...

    My 999 sounds like this;

    Gerr...Err......Chug....er...Chug...erBrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmm

Now the battery is fully charged - and supposedly not that old...(it also has a bloody alarm to contend with ) and listening to some Youtube videos it does seem that the starter sounds lazy and stained kicking other 999's into life.

The only thing is it doesn't inspire confidence that one morning the starter will change from lazy to not wanting to get out of bed...anyone have any views on this???

Otherwise 99.9999% delighted new owner :upyeah:

  2. Run an extra earth from -ve battery terminal to starter mounting bolt. That will give extra 0.2/0.4v charging and increase turn over on starting.

  3. That's how it is Moo , only hit the starter once till it's run through its procedure . It's servo assisted but it's got to deal with two huge pistons and the compression that entails. In fact what I like to do when alongside jap thous is to stab the starter , then move away from bike to adjust helmet or whatever whilst it starts , that seems to annoy the finger on the button brigade till it starts rice riders :)

  4. Yeah, tbh my 848 Chugs over a bit to start! it actually takes longer to start than my buddies 748 Now, his takes maybe one crank rotation, mine buzzes over for 5 or so seconds, just super high compression and smaller battery's than in the older models I suspect. FYI on the Panigale's they use an 'Auto Decompression' system that allows them to turn over but tbh you still seem to wind those over for a bit!!!!

Glad you like the bike, looks nice, and if it came from Pro-Twins it will prob be a mechanically nice one. They seem to have a good rep.

  5. Another point.

    It has Termis - great!

But I was expecting a lot from this ridiculously expensive bit of kit...(£1800 new?) Never experienced them before and my impression is ... well they sound like an exhaust.

Ok they are sllightly louder and probablly there are power advantages (there ruddy well should be at that price) but the note is very ordinary - no boom - no bark - no rasp.

If I had bought a standard bike and paid a fortune to have it converted I would be feeling pretty dissapointed by now.

Am I wrong? Did I expect too much?

  6. You have the cheaper termis. The £2400 set made you an espresso on approach so you can drink while you wait for the whiring to stop and the bike to start

    Welcome

  7. I have same system, assymetric, can and half pipe that loses the cat. About £1200 new. Mine was on the bike when I bought it. They came as a kit with filters and ecu but my bike didn't have those which leaves a bit of a hole in the power at 4-5000 rpm. Check you've got them as some dealers just fitted the can as a cheap job. I think the termi makes a great sound, loud but not obscene. They are overpriced and not very well made but its the 'correct' exhaust for a Duke.

  8. Wow 900Street - you can tell that by the pic? Well apparently they are Pro Twins fitted and came with filters and a "racing ECU" whatever that means - Also came with a much more sensitive throttle which seems a-ok to me but being a Ducati newbie what do I know?

Hey I ain't complaining - the whole bike comes as a fantastic package and I ain't changing a thing - except perhaps the "racing" filler cap that leaves you with a cheap looking lid (looks like it came off an old 50 gallon oil drum ) to hold onto whilst filling up which is loosing it's flimsy rubber seal... Previous owner gave me the original fitment (which has the advantage of being a) lockable and b) don't have to hold onto it whilst filling up ) which I may well put back on.

  9. Not sure if its assymetric tbh.
The standard cap look like its off a Ford Cortina.

  10. regarding the starting being a bit 'lazy' that is normal for 999's. it's because of the battery size in comparison to the huge 2 cylinders it has to turn.

Make sure you do NOT pull the fast idle lever before the bike starts, it will make starting harder. in the cold press the ignition button let it start turning and the moment it sounds like it caught up and starting to run pull the fast idle level down to keep it from dying till warms up.

I've talked to multiple ducati dealers, i've run extra earth leads, i've bought brand new battery (gel type, which are meant to have more cranking power) and i've bought a trickle charger, still the same.

nonetheless the bike does start, just always sounds like maybe the bat is low.
    Very normal for these.

  11. *ahem* you can start my R6 with the aaa batteries you had to take out of the tv remote because it stopped working... Just saying...

Enjoy the bike :) I did the earth lead mod on my old 749 and it made a world of difference. The alarm had to be removed though, it destroyed batteries for fun.

  12. True, but then again, do you want to ride a japanese toy that runs on tripple A's or an italian, power hungry v twin ;)

  13. I think you all know the answer to that ;)

  14. Looks like I'll have to invest in a "Trolley acc" like they used to start Spitfires with back into day...

"Clear prop!" - "Trolley Acc" Off" ....

Quite a cool show for the neighbours actually

  15. Get the suspension set up for you and you will love it even more!

    Makes a HUGE difference.
