I’d love to hear from anyone who’s had a Multistrada Enduro 1200 or 1260 in the past and now has a Desert X. I’ve wanted an Enduro for years but have failed to find a crashed one to work on. Yet every time I see a Desert X on the road or posted here I can’t help but think how good they look. They also appear to pop up in need of repair occasionally already. Obviously the Enduro is a much bigger heavier bike, I realise that, but what would you rather use for touring or other types of riding? There must be a few people who’ve had both. I don’t want hard core offroad ability, but want to do a few trails and some longer distances. I’m set on an Enduro by the way not a ‘normal’ Multi. What about luggage? I assume kitting a DX out isn't an issue. Thanks
I'm surprised nobody has chipped in on this, I'd have thought there would have been a few people who'd owned both. Or perhaps I'm just not worthy of a reply
I cant comment on the Enduro but I had a DVT1200 a few years back. The DDX feels a lot lighter and is more agile than the DVT. The only issue I can think of with the DDX is the rider is not as well protected from the wind. There are lots of posts online of riders trying to make it perfect but its just not that type of bike to my mind. Ive also been spoiled by my V4S Multi are sold for the DDX. That has aerodynamics like no other bike I have ridden but even that comes with its issue in that you have no idea how fast you are going from a complete laxck of windblast.
A lot of it can depend on your size and ability. It’s a fact a really good rider can handle a big heavy bike. Look at Chris Birch on the KTMs he’s not a big bloke either, just very talented. If you have a good length inside leg it always helps with these tall heavy bikes. How much road work and miles per day also a factor. The multi enduro will have a good edge for relaxed touring, but try picking it up on a wet cambered bank after a turn went wrong, big and heavy. Horses for courses innit . . ,
I have had a pre DVT multi, a 1200 enduro and now a 1260 enduro. I've only ridden the desert X a short way. In my view they are aimed at different things. The X is designed to be used more off road, is lighter, has less ergonomic and cheaper to replace parts. You can get luggage for it and can tour on it, but when i checked if you fit the longer range tank you can't have the luggage. That may have changed. As for the Enduro I have ridden mine lightly off road in various places across europe. What I mean is generally dirt and gravel tracks, not full on enduro in the true sense of the word. Things like wing mirrors and hand guards are easily broken if you drop it. It is a heavy bike to pick up from totally on its side (when a GS goes down it rests on its cylinders, so despite being heavier its easier to manage from this point of view). Metal panniers and their bracketry are real heavy compared to the plastic luggage. The Enduro makes a great long distance bike. Its my main bike for trips, generally 2 up with luggage, but also blasting around solo. The 1260 is a step up from the 1200 imo due to its quick shifter and other minor changes. If I was going to do some green laning or, say the TET solo (which is what I originally bought my 1200 enduro for) I think the X would be a better match. I hope that helps. Cheers, John.
Apologies all, I'd somehow missed these replies. I think your answers have confirmed my thoughts. As much as I love the look of the DX, an Enduro would be more suited to my intended use but will still cover the look I want.
I could be interested John, but I'm really after a project: Plus https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/multistrada-project-wanted.99927/
