BBC News - John Bell: Belfast street named after physicist who proved Einstein wrong Queen's University Belfast, never had the money to do a degree, started as a lab tech and was allowed to attend lectures. Someone noticed him, was awarded a Grant and the highlight, proved Einstein wrong.
"Einstein was wrong" - really misleading headline to this story. It is not suggested that Einstein was wrong about Special Relativity, or General Relativity, or many other major things he worked on. Some of Einstein's later work on quantum was indeed on the wrong lines and was superseded by other work. So this is idiotically summarised as "Einstein was wrong".
cut and paste "Getting our young people interested in science is essential for building a solid economy in Northern Ireland. It is fitting that the inaugural Science Festival begins with the unveiling of a largely unknown local scientific genius," she said. "The Institute of Physics described John Bell as one of the top ten physicists of the twentieth century, in the same league as Einstein, Heisenberg and Schrodinger. His legacy in quantum physics continues today and his story is an inspiration to us all." Good enough for me, regardless of the media headline.
John bell was very insightful and clearly worthy of praise, no doubts there. On that basis he is/was a great example to the youth of Ireland, no doubts there either. The headline that you chose to link is, as Pete pointed out better than me, misleading in respect to the article.
