I am installing my rear view camera on my 1198. I've spliced the power lead that goes to the headlight and once the ignition turns the screen goes from a green tinge (off) to a black screen, which suggests it is working. The rear camera is taking power from the rear light, but i have no means of telling if it is working. I believe that fact the screen only goes black suggests there is no video input. Could it be the rear light is not giving the camera the full 12v it needs? I did hold the camera's power leads straight to the batteries though and same result. Bit stumped now, any ideas anyone or could it be simply that the camera is faulty?
Sorry, you can get video camera to show behind on a screen you mount up front??? Does that mean you don't need mirrors for MOT? I'm still getting used to a clock!
Without a volt meter you'll struggle to tell, a 12v bulb will work on 11 volts (just dim) where a digital camera will expect and only work on the required volt input.
A digital camera will most likely work with voltages that are a volt or more either side of it's required voltage because, like most electronic devices, it will have an inbuilt voltage regulator to ensure that it runs with a stable voltage. That will be less than the supply voltage. Why don't you rig the thing up off the bike, powered from a battery, so that you can test it and make sure it is working. Then when you are sure that it all works fit it to the bike.
I did think about that, should of done it before i stripped the bike really Do you mean a car/bike battery, hook it up to another of those? I did wire the camera direct to the battery on the bike and still the same result.
