Hello, New member here so hopefully I'm posting this in the right place, apologies if not. I've got a bit of an electrical drama with my bike (2009 Hypermotard 1100s) and I'm hoping someone might be able to confirm or deny my thinking. I was riding a few weeks ago, started getting a few strange electrical problems such as fast blinking indicators and engine light coming on, before the bike cut out all together and wouldn't start again. I figured I must have a bad battery so I replaced it. Bike started up fine. I took it for another ride, got about 20 miles and it died again. I charged the battery with my trickle charger, read 12.3V with my multimeter and hooked it back up to the bike. 12.3V with the ignition off, slightly less with the ignition on. I turned the bike on and the voltage increased as expected. The problem is that it didn't stop increasing and got up to about 18V before I turned it off. I'm thinking my voltage regulator is bad. I've checked all the obvious things such as connector terminals and wires and they all seem fine. Does anyone know of any other way I can confirm whether or not the voltage regulator is bad? Or have I done enough already to diagnose it? Or maybe I'm way off?? As you all know, spare parts arent exactly cheap so I'm just after a little more assurance before I depart with my hard earned pennies! Thanks very much!
18V is far too high! Should be around 14-ish max. Definitely reg-rec replacement time - have a look here for other threads about suitable replacements.

You’ve done the output test on the r/r so no need to do any other tests on that, it’s gone. You’ll need a new r/r. DO NOT buy a 2nd hand one just to save a few pounds for you have idea what condition it is in or how long it will last. Buy a new one. Where I’ve had to replace mine (2bikes) Ive always bought from Electrexworld, Mosfet type, and never had an issue, they’ve just been plug & play, other suppliers are of course available. One final point is Ive never had a Hyper so don’t know where the r/r is situated but heat build up is one of the things that damaged the circuitry of the r/r over time. If it’s not in a place of good fresh air flow I’d consider relocating it.
