Hi, I’m a new member. I’ve got a few bikes of my own but I’m currently trying to rebuild a 999 Ducati for my son which was dismantled when he bought it. I’ve got the bike together now but on connecting a battery all I get is the fuel pump priming. The only other thing that happens is the rear light flashes whether the ignition is on or not. The instruments, switches etc are all dead. The fuses are all ok. I have 2 questions Does the flashing rear light indicate the bike has an alarm fitted? I didn’t see one on the rebuild unless it is hidden behind the battery box. Secondly any idea where to start looking for the fault. I have got all the keys including the red one. Many thanks for any advice.
Check that you have fastened the small black earth fly lead onto one of the bolts securing the ECU and not anywhere else. The pump/coil/injector relay on the 999 can cause all sorts of electrical gremlins. It is found behind the heat shield of the battery box. It is a £3 part that should really be changed yearly. There is a 3 amp fuse (purple I think) on the battery box that protects the ECU that can blow. Otherwise it is a case of checking you have got the correct connectors linked together. It is possible to misconnect some of the components.
Thank you for the quick reply I’ll work through these. Any thoughts on the constantly flashing rear light. I assume they don’t do this from the factory. It is an aftermarket tail tidy unit. Is the coil relay the battery side of the heat shield or the engine side? Thanks again.
It’s sorted. Some contact cleaner in the ignition switch block connector and it all kicked in. Thanks again for the help.
