748 Elextrex Generator

  1. Hi All, I've recently noticed a sulphur smell coming from my 97' 748 whilst warming it up before going for a run. This usually indicates the battery is being over charged. Anyway I bought one of those Gammtronix battery indicators. It immediately flashed green and red alternately at anything over idle speed. I've checked the regulated output with an ammeter and I get a reading of 13.4 - 14.0v at idle which rises to 17.0 v at 3,000 rpm. Now my question is has anyone tried fitting one of the Elextrex G 93 generators, or is it better to send my original to be rewound and upgraded wiring to somewhere like West Country windings. My battery is about a year old and I replaced the reg/rec. about 3 years ago ,this was an Elextrex one.I know this subject has been done to death on here, but I figure that my bike is of an age that I'll probably only get more charging problems, so I might aswell replace/recondition the generator and if needed get a new reg/rec. this will then give me total electrical reliability for another 18 years. Lol.
    Thanks Dogrose

  2. @Chris have you misread the post? The op is asking whether to have his generator rewound.
The generator is not the problem but the reg / rec is, as you suggested fit a shindengen unit as in my experience the Electric ones are rubbish after two failed in two years on my 748.

  3. In my experience the generator is very reliable and rarely gives any trouble, the main problems are the connectors and the reg/rec.
I would replace the reg with a quality item like the one I mentioned in the earlier post and leave the generator alone as it is doing its job OK.

  4. Dogrose, did you check the ac output from the generator? As suggested by Birdie the generators are pretty reliable, there is not a lot to go wrong and they pretty much work or not, any issues are down to the connectors and the regulator/rectifier which will damage the wires or burn it out. I would bet on your connector having got burnt and the regulator is now fecked. Done to death already but get rid of the connector before you waste any money on a generator. A new regulator with properly made connections to the reg/rec is all you need right now

  5. Thanks for the replies up to now. I am going to do the unregulated output test as suggested by Denzil, which is detailed in the Haynes manual. Steve, I am going to try to get the Shindengen mosfet setup you've fitted to your 748. Is yours an early type two yellow wired genny ,and did you have to use a part from a Triumph to connect it up?
Thanks again, all, for the advice Dogrose

  6. Mine is the early two wire single phase system, the kit will fit both systems and the kit I have given the link to is all that was needed, no need for a triumph adaptor.

  7. As my bike is a keeper I went the route of fitting the reg behind the number plate to keep it cool although I don't think it's necessary as the shindengen has a thermal cut out to prevent overheating.

  8. Ok , I've ordered The reg/Rec kit off ebay. I'll check out the Generator next. This bike is also a keeper for me, I've had it from new. Cheers Dogrose
