I’ll start this off with, we all make a mistake once and you learn the hard way. Anyway to the point, I have stripped a thread and I need to do something about it. https://www.bike-parts-ducati.com/d...796/Monster-796/OIL-PUMP--FILTER/53/3407/0/53 In the following link part number 7 which is a M15 x 1.0mm thread pitch bolt is still in tact but the threads in the engine case it goes into don’t really exist anymore due to setting the wrong torque. This bolt needs 20Nm not 45 Now that the damage is done, what can I do about it? I’ve looked into helicoils or time-sert or tap a larger diameter thread but I am unsure this will work due to the thin part of casing that surrounds the bottom of this threaded part. I thank you in advance for your help.
I imagine you would like to retain the standard drain bolt, so Helicoil or Time-sert or whatever is available currently is probably the best solution.
i can recommend Time sert, but also see Kerb Konus https://www.kerbkonus.de/en/index.php as they seem a little cheaper and also the same as OEM bmw oil pan thread repair
Thank you for your comments, just wanted to provide an update after sitting in this issue for a week and researching the realistic options. I’ve measured the hole more carefully and found that the removed plug is 14.8mm in diameter and the diameter in the engine casing is the same as this. I believe from my research that these are the options available to me: A. Tap a M16 x 1.5 thread and insert a new plug and try remember to never touch it again in fear of the threads coming out with the plug again. The drill size for this size tap is the same as the existing hole. B. Drill out to 16.25mm and tap for a M16 x 1.5 helicoil. C. Tap and insert a M14 x 1.5 time-sert. This size will fit in the existing size hole. I currently don’t have the tool(s) to carry out any of these options, I understand these are also in order of price, option A would simply require me to buy a tap and drill bit but may not be the best solution in the long term, option B sounds do-able I’d just like someone to confirm my understanding of the drill size, tap size and plug size are correct for heli-coil, option C feels like the best possible solution mechanically but I cannot figure out where to get the tools and parts to carry out a time-sert for less than 700GBP. Hoping you lot can help me make a final decision and also advise where I can get the tools and parts to do this for a reasonable price, even the snap on van man wasn’t able to help as they don’t go above M12 in thread repair tools. Thank you for your help.
I may be missing something, but if this is correct, I don’t really understand any of your suggested options.
Ducati uses a M15 x 1 sump plug on the secondary oil drain plug, the sump plug is fine but the engine casing doesn’t have threads left on it, I cannot re-use the original sump plug as no one sells a tap that size or a thread repair kit that size and heli-coil do not make an insert that size, there very limited space available to repair this so I’ve found the options that will likely fit and looking for experienced advice on which may be the best option. If you have a different option available then I’m all ears.
What about using a spark plug repair insert ? I’ve used those kits a few times and they usually come with various size inserts and the tool to fit them. Not sure if they come in the size you need but worth a look.
