I've been having an intermittent problem with my bike over the last few months. It all seemed to start when I got some new heated grips fitted under warranty. The day after I got my grips fitted I took the wife out for an egg bun at Devils bridge, I know I know I spoil her, a ride on a mutly and food, sheesh read it and weep girls. Any how the bike preformed flawlessly on the ride to Devils but when we set off back she spluttered and stalled as soon as we set off. After turning it off and then restarting it ran ok but when ever I opened it up it would cut out then jump back into life them cut out then back into life.......ect to be honest it was a bit scary the front would dive then leave the floor and dive again until I shut her off. I took her back to the dealers and he said he must have knocked a throttle position wire or some thing when installing the new grips, and to be fair after he tinkered with it all seemed fine. any how yesterday I went for a blat up to hearthside café. any one who's been there will know the road is a mini stelvio up to the café. The bike ran fine although I have noticed over the last month or so that she hasn't seemed as responsive as she used to be but I was thinking maybe it's me getting use to the beast. I stopped and had a coffee then decided to carry on down the other side to see where it took me. The bike started fine I got my gear on and set off I got 30ft around the car park when it lost power and stopped dead. I turned it off once again feeling the eyes of a 1000 bikers watching me. I set off and it went ok for 1/2 a mile then when I opened her up she did the Yes! you can have the power! oh No!I've changed my mind you can't O go on then......nah I don't want let you. shes just a big tease. Not know what the feck was going on I pulled into a garage for fuel and decided may be I should make a bolt for home 110miles away. I fuled up and set off ? she ran fine again. so I decided once I got near home I pop up to Devils bridge and get a bacon bun and a brew. I set off from Devils and the bike stopped, I started her again and managed to get 400 mtrs then she came to a total stop, she would only start with the stand down as soon as I put the stand up and selected first she stopped. AH HA! a clue! was it my stand switch? I pushed the bike 1/2 a mile until I could pull her out of the flow of traffic (Ho by the way the bikers code doesn't work in Cumbria out of the several hundred bikes that went past not one of them even slowed down let alone asked if I needed help) Any how I put her on the centre stand and took the bolt out that holds the over engineered stand switch in place as soon as the bolt came out so did a lot of water, the thing was full so full in fact that when I traced the wire back to the plug you could see a scum under the protective sheath. I could have kept fish in there. I swivelled the little pin round and tried to get it to run in gear but it just wouldn't have it. I was going to link the wires using some head phone wires I found whilst taking my bike for a country stroll. but I wisent sure which of the 3 wires to join, so I had to phone Green flag who kindly assembled a trailer and brought us home. I've phoned my Dealer and he said to save him coming and picking the bike up he will send me a new stand switch. We both agreed that the intermittent fault was probably the water in the stand switch. then at the end of the conversation he said I don't have one in stock so I'll have to order one, "I'll order a few it's a common problem." So I don't know how many of you may have this problem, but just a heads up it you bike starts giving and taking or stopping when you've had a brew check your switch aint full of soapy water.
Tbh half way through your post, I thought sidestand switch! This happened to me last month, very nearly had me off when it just shut off coming out of a bend and then powered up again. Luckily I limped to a mates house and having read before about this, jumped the switch and carried on my way. Potentially very dangerouse depending when it starts to play up though
Surely the software should be written to "seek the position during start up with gear selected and ignored at all other times"?
have fitted a stand switch bypass - there is a proper plug in somewhere on ebay you can buy - instead of diy. and also had 4 new starter handlebar switches same symptoms so I'd do both.
sidestand switch eliminator, fits straight onto existing connector - no rewiring required. Amazon.com: TPO Parts Kickstand Switch Eliminator for most Ducati: Automotive
not sure never checked, I got the link from us forum so wanted to not take too many risks ordering an alternative one and 30 quid wasn't too bad, from memory it arrived within a week or so.
well I have had the bike since 2010, in that time I had the starter switch fail 3-4 times and then the kickstand switch (which I found after replacing the start switch - which needs the tank off but am quite good at it now!). so yea, if you are getting "bike dying symptoms during riding - even for a micro second" then my reaction would be to first check and replace these 2. to fit it is easy just find connector unplug from sidestand and plug in this unit - see pic. - takes about 10 secs.
