exhaust clamp

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Toomanybikes, Oct 20, 2012.

  1. I need to buy 2 exhaust clamps for my slip on cans (for my 750ss). Can someone please tell me the right size?

  2. Actually, my question should be am I missing a clamp or does 'slip on cans' literally mean slip on with no clamps?! cans.jpg

  3. No clamps needed, but I have them on mine because some tw*at made the outside part of the sockets a bit untidy, so the clamps cover it up....

However, you can get away with just pushing them in tight, but you can sometimes find the whole can and link pipe rotates a bit or goes wobbly....I stuff clear silicone down my sockets and then shove the pipes in, bolt them on the hangers and let it all go off for a day......

  4. No clamps? really? Both cans are a bit wibbly wobbly. I'll try and push them in a bit. Getting the charging system checked on Monday by Dave, as battery is still draining overnight. Seeing as I have 'performance' cans, what would be a suitable 'stage 1' tune?

  5. If you put a clamp on them and wind them up as tight as possible, you still won't get them to clamp the pipe.....mine are there just as a tidy....

What pipes are 'performance' ones?....mine are straight through but not very noisy....I have a Stage II Dynojet Kit fitted and the trumpets are out of my airbox...

I wonder if your reg/rec is draining the battery.........did you discover which reg/rec you have fitted? The RR51 should not be a problem, but the OEM has been a lot of trouble and can catch fire.............

Both OEM and RR51 have a direct connection to the battery and is therefore 'live' without the ignition 'On' although switching 'On' makes the reg/rec complete the circuit to 'earth'.....

Does the battery drain if not connetced at all?

  6. Thanks. I'll push the pipe in and use some sealer instead.
Battery will drain when connected. Not had a chance to see what rectifier it is, but Dave will put it right, as he is also doing a belt/check oil change on Monday. When I had my own garage I did all of my own servicing, but an 18 month baby and my own business has put an end to that!
The cans are J.A.C and the airbox is still intact. Thanks your help again.

  7. As Al says, you dont need clamps, i dont have them and my cans are a little loose, no problem at all.

  8. Good post, I had the same problem with my 750. It's (no clamp)was the only odd detail I have found on this great bike. I was going to slit the sockets so a clamp would work, but instead dropped the pipes, added a little length to the slots in the alloy can tabs(adding a little rotation sets up tension). After reassembly they are tight again. It is a weird setup, but I have to believe they were tight from the factory. I think just metal fatigue or just a "lie on the lawn" is enough to cause the wobbles.

  9. get some asbestos gloves on and try wobbling it when its been on a proper run... you'll be surprised at how tight they are.

To put clamps on you'd need to cut slots into the downpipe section so that it can crush when you do them up. if you're worried you can create some shims, but you don't really need them.
