Hi, I have Multistrada 1000DS, 2003, just had full service done on it, but seems like below issue has been overlooked. There is a tiny gap in the vertical head exhaust pipe, or probably the sealing is faulty. In the middle, where these two parts meet, as per attached picture. I wouldn’t say it’s making it louder, but the fumes are surely going out and straight to my leg, not pleasant. Would you say it’s easily fixable, or can I just pour some exhaust paste in there? Or does it have to be dismantled and new gasket put in place? Thank you! Kind Regards, Martin
There won't be a gasket, they're just bloody fiddly things to get seated, you need to dismantle the exhaust system (don't remove header) & reassemble starting at the header making sure the joints are all the way home, a smear of grease helps. Not a big job but cue grazed knuckles & lots of swearing, if you're feeling really masochistic you could give em a polish while your at it
Nice, thank you for the advice! I take it the compensator and the vertical pipe are one piece, aren’t they. Would you know if I have to take off the silencer exhaust pipe and silencer as well (the part under both seats)? I guess I can leave the horizontal exhaust pipe on…I hope Looks like I know how I will be spending my day off
I'm not familiar with the system tbh, IIRC there's a big "lump" (collector) that joins the hor & vert pipes then a single pipe from that up to the twin silencers. It may be you can "loosen" it all and jiggle her into position. Don't know if @finm has ever had his in bits if so he may be able to advise

There IS a gasket both at the cylinder head and at the union of the header pipe and the cat pipe. That gasket is about £2.00 from Ducati. See page 42, items No.28 and No.4 http://www.carlsalter.com/pdfs/Ducati_MTS1100S Parts 2007.pdf
Yep, found those, thank you! All I am wondering now if all the exhaust system needs to be taken apart for the gasket number 28 to be replaced. Or if just the compensator together with the cat pipe can be removed separately. Would you know please?
Loosen the catalytic converter brackets and remove the header pipe, you should be able to get a new gasket in there, you don't need to remove the whole exhaust system
