Exhaust Emissions And Sound Level In V5

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Pete1950, Apr 16, 2017.

  1. I have just received from the DVLA the V5 Registration Certificate for my new 2017 bike. Reading down the Vehicle Details section, I notice the following information fields appear:

    "U Sound level:
    U1 Stationary (dB(A)) - 100
    U2 Engine speed - 4750
    U3 Drive-by (dB(A)) - 77

    V Exhaust emissions:
    V1 CO (g/km or g/kWh) - 0.868
    V2 HC (g/km or g/kWh) - 0.084
    V3 NOx (g/km or g/kWh) - 0.073"
    etc.

No doubt similar figures now appear on all V5s for new bikes. The quoted figures are presumably based on data filed by the manufacturer, and no doubt comply with relevant legislation.

Hitherto MOT tests for bikes (unlike cars) have not included testing either gas emissions or sound levels, because there was no baseline against which to measure passes or fails. Well, now there is. Given that noise meters and exhaust gas analysers have become increasingly commonplace, I predict that within five years the bike MOT will be extended to include these parameters.

When that time comes, there will be a stampede of guys needing to remove their fancy aftermarket exhaust systems and re-install the original catalysts. The moral is - if you remove your cat, you had better keep it carefully in storage because you'll be needing it one day.

  2. Or classic bikes will become even more desirable for this additional reason.

  3. Dull times ahead! when it comes to buying bikes maybe going backwards is the way forwards.

  4. Sad day indeed. I'd have no chance regarding the noise levels with my 1199s with Termi slips ons. The MOT tester last week gave me a noisy exhaust advisory!

The emissions change worry me the most.

  5. So does this mean that no more Harley's are going to be built! Every cloud has a silver lining an all that! :D

  6. Have a 52 Harley that hope to put back on the road this year, suspect they will never have any data available for it, so I can continue to improve it for ever

As for new Harleys they have about as much interest to me as the latest Kia hatchback car

  7. One of the advantages of having something that's so piss poor to start with. :Bag: Every cloud.....:D

  8. The V5 on my 1299 states 108dB at 5,250rpm... I would imagine the 1199 must have a similar figure, and the Termis shouldn't be much louder (they are certainly quieter with the baffles - around 105-106dB is what I've seen at trackday testing). So you shouldn't have too much to worry about.

  9. They don't want them noisy motorbikes in Hayle Max!

  10. I reckon these might be termis with the insides burnt out or something Ron? It's borderline but I can just about get through 105db static testing with the 1199S with termis and have never been refused yet. With the baffles in I get around 103db.

  11. Well my neighbours are about to find out just how loud the Pani is on a quiet bank holiday morning. Que the curtains twitching in three, two, one... :)

  12. The noise levels are the easy bit. How are you going to meet the gas emissions figures?

  14. dont we have to do that already anyway?

  15. Yes had it on the dyno 63 ft lb of torque vs 60 ft lb of torque on the 900 ducati

A few improvements have been made

  16. I'm surprised it's not already part of the test to be honest. I don't own anything newer than 2003 but do more modern cars get tested for emissions against data on the V5? Given the shambles that is the DVLA that sounds like a recipe for disaster!

On older cars you have set limits to attain and this could easily be implemented for bikes as they know whether it should be Euro3/Euro4 etc. and therefore can insist you need to meet at least that limit (with a little latitude for wear and tear maybe). I wonder if it is the relatively small number of motorcycles and the cost of equipment that has kept this away so far? Many small garages complain about the rising cost of equipment needed to satisfy constantly changing MOT requirements. I can see many of the smaller MOT garages not bothering if the costs rise for them.

I guess the main worry will be how retrospective will it be when implemented.... When the car emissions test was introduced in 1991 many cars with SU carbs struggled to meet the 1976 onwards test (e.g. MGBs etc). Will they introduce a test that applied to bikes already 15 years old like they did with cars? The pre-76 test for cars is "no visible smoke" so where will that leave 2 strokes?

  17. not on a motorbike so far?

  18. Very cheap and throw away inserts.
If Elsie doesn't get to it first I'll make them.
Activated carbon...should last as long as the MOT test.
