Rebuilding a 1994 Monster 900 engine into my '96 Superlight. The exhaust gaskets that fit into the heads have gone from both my original engine and may never have come with the Monster engine I have fitted to this. Engine is now in the frame and just the last few bits to sort out before firing it up for a quick test just to ensure no oil leaks etc. Slightly surprisingly the exhaust gaskets didn't come with the top-end kit I bought for the engine so I'll have to get new ones. I am now impatient and getting ones from Ducati will likely mean a wait until next week. Question is - I've measured what I reckon are the requirements - to fit into a 48mm bore and prob around 5mm thick, ie 38mm internal bore. Is another bike (car even ?!) likely to be able to let me source these, or at least something to do the job even short-term, from a more local supplier ? Honda bike shop is in town plus parts stores etc so I could ask around and hope to find a helpful parts-man ? Andy
I guess so, they are very basic gaskets probably similar to many other applications. Can you not wait?
Yeah, I could but I'm enlisting the services of a mate of mine and he's free tomorrow so we were hoping to get it fired up for a basic check before bolting on the final bits and pieces like the rear wheel, swinging arm etc.
Go to your local Exhaust Repair or Motor Parts store with your measurements and see what they've got, from any type or make of vehicle will do.
Managed to get sorted out - I forgot there is a Ducati service place nearby and they had 2 half rings in stock plus 2 gaskets so I'm good to go.
Yup ! Totally forgot Ian's place was local as I'd been ordering parts from Glasgow. Had hoped that would have exhaust gaskets but thought it less likely they'd have the 1/2 rings but I struck lucky this time. Bike ran for the first time in 2 years on Friday evening with the rebuilt engine that I had bought that had sat for around 10 years - well chuffed.
If I couldn't get half exhaust colletts from a main dealer (Moto Rapido, say...!!!) I would make the damn things..........It isn't hard with a ball-pene hammer and a decent vice.......
They are pretty simple little bits of metal but fortunately they aren't vastly overpriced like some bike/car bits. Not sure my technical skills would result in more than some bent metal and bruised fingers if I attempted fabrication tho'.
