Exhaust Off Job?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Nwsparky, Feb 13, 2015.

  1. so ive started to get to know my new beast today, took a few bits off got it up on my garage sling, can't believe its four years old!
Anyway ive had a quick clean and lube of the chain which was fairly dry, my questions are, when I remove the rear suspension link to fit the adjustable one ive found it looks like I'll have to remove the exhaust, does this seperate easily once brackets/bolts and springs are removed? It's a bit of a faff for one bolt but when it's done it's done. Also if the rear of the bike is suspended by the frame will the rear wheel drop down forcibly when I remove the link? Do I need to strap the swing arm to compress it?
    Thanks

  2. I'm about to do the same as you with the rear height adjuster but with rear shock as well. I've made a couple of A frames with a 20 mm round bar which passes through the top frame tube. If you have suspended the bike via the rear sub frame, you could then use a small jack under the swing arm to take the weight off the R/H adjuster bolts. Bit of wriggling about and they should come out.

  3. I thought that would be the plan. Is the exhaust easy enough to get off? Any easier way to get at the bottom bolt?

  4. Thanks looks good, will the exhaust need sealant on it when I put it back on?

  5. Shouldn't need anything, I do use a bit of C100 or some other Hi temp lube sparingly applied around the inside to help the pieces slide together but I've never applied any sealant to mine

Others will confirm or contradict can only tell you what I've done and not had any leaks

  6. Thanks I haven't myself in the past, I was told be an exhaust manufacturer to use domestic silicone to help it slip together?

  7. Well I spent an hour carefully removing lower fairing, foot rest, heat shield, exhaust bracket/springs etc then realised they as the rear wheel drops when I raise the frame ive got enough room to get an 8mm Allen key and bar in the gap above the rear wheel! No need to remove the exhaust! Thankfully I hadn't got that far, so I put the bits back on and will change the link this morning..,:Arghh::upyeah:

  8. You're right. If you're only changing the link, you shouldn't have to touch anything else. It's a doddle to get the mid pipes off though...
