My Mutley 1200 has been found to have damaged surfaces on the belt pulleys and they need replacing. I need to get them looked at by an engine/metallurgy expert to say why they have gone all cracked. Ducati UK say they have had no problems reported to them on any of their models! Any ideas please as to who could inspect and do a report? Bike has full Ducati service history and has done 28,000 miles. Thanks.
There is another thread reporting damaged pulleys. Steve 1200 - Accidental Timing Belt "guide Pulley" Damage | Ducati Forum
No idea. My bike started making a very high speed chirping noise so took to dealer with Air Con Technicals @damaged pulleys' thread warning fresh in my mind (we have near identical mileage). They inspected the pulleys which had cracked surfaces and damaged belts; hence chirppy noise! Dealer sent e-mail and picks to Ducati UK who's reply was a case of 'no problems reported on any models/mileage etc etc. I then think if that's the case then mine are sub standard/iffy batch and shouldn't have cracked.
That's what I'd like to know. If Ducati UK are saying my issue is abnormal; as they haven't had any problems, then I'd presume that my pulleys are not fit for purpose after 28,000 miles with full DSH! Interesting that service schedule says check belts&pulleys at every 15000 miles; not at every 7500 too.
in the motor trade i wont do a belt on its own, i also refuse to check it, its replace or nothing, i know what that sounds like but from bitter experience over the years it's for the best.
I've seen pulleys on 4V Desmoquattro engines with well over 50,000 miles on them with no problems and on 2V engines with over 100,000 miles and nothing wrong with them. The pulleys don't generally wear out, the bearings do. If the surface of the pulley has been damaged it is most likely due a foreign object getting in.
