Not sure I agree with him, but impressed that the entire video appears to have been captured in one take.
I really enjoy watching this guy, but my armour won’t do any harm and might do some good, so I will be keeping it where it is.
I like his articles, but fear this one will do more damage than good. I get the point being made, and also like the idea of an airbag as a primary protection mechanism but think some people will want to hear this and wear less protective clothing as a result. I go on byways a bit, and consequently fall off a bit. I've fallen onto some hard rocky surfaces when the armour for my elbow (and Knee on one occassion) has been in just the wrong position and I've whacked the joint. Whilst it didnt break (elbow or knee) it gave me 3-6 months of pain and made me use armour that fits close to your body rather than in the jacket or jeans especially when riding lanes. I know it wont help a collarbone being smashed, but it will help me avoid more minor injuries.
Well my chum was wearing armour in his jeans but still dislocated his knee after a low speed crash. However I think I’ll still keep mine in.
I found the whole thing quite disturbing if I'm honest, a lot of people look to him for some good advice and many don't know any better. I for one have never found it very uncomfortable to wear, I understand it might not prevent an injury but would much rather be sitting in hospital knowing I did my best to mitigate the damage than not have the armour and always have that doubt, I recon that'll drive me mad.
The guy comes to some strange conclusions about many things imo. Look at his vids for body position and tyres. Seems we should stay bolt upright at full lean for starters.
Most bikes have a degree of anti squat built in, changing the sprockets can change the amount, the same with the adjustable pivots you see, I know it doesn't eliminate squat just reduces it. How much use it is on a tractor I could not tel you LOL
I don't think he was advocating don't use armour; he was stating that the safety threshold for it was set too low, and set by manufacturers (conflict of interest) which means that it is not as good as it could be due to cost/margins/etc.. So the safety ratings should have been set independently to force the product manufacturers to provide greater levels of protection as they would need to meet an independent standard not one manufactured to their own standarsd based around, for example, just a cost/margin. Flip side is that the cost of better rated gear would obviously increase. Basically is saying the system for rating kit is flawed - the old poacher turned gamekeeper situation...
It depends how fast you are going, on what, and what are the physical limits of what you are trying to achieve on the bike. You don’t get MX, moto gymkhana or Police instructors getting their elbow down hanging off to the inside.
