Finally Retired :-(

  1. So, after playing open age rugby for 30 seasons, I have finally hung my boots up.

may not seem a big thing, but I always wanted to keep playing until I could get a game alongside my sons, so bang goes that wish (although have played charity touch rugby tournaments alongside them for the past 5 summers).

a displaced fracture in my right forearm (radius) made me see that as I am getting older, I am getting slower and it seems more fragile, so best to stop now and focus more on the coaching side.

anyway, enough wallowing, attached are a few pics. 1st is with the radius out of position at the break before "manipulation" back in to place, 2nd is the x-ray after manipulation, next 2 show a bit of the bruising.

  2. Take up something less strenuous like snowboarding and climbing like I have :)

  3. too heavy for climbing (or the sort where power to weight ratios are very important), but prefer skiing to snowboarding (although have thought about doing snowboard lessons, just to see what I don't like)

  4. I skied for 25 years before learning to snowboard. I much prefer snowboarding now, maybe cos I'm better at it and can do some fairly serious jumps and rails now.

And I only took up climbing 2 months ago and love it!

Not bad for an old giffer :upyeah:

  5. two paracetomol, it'll be fine.

i keep thinking about trying boarding, but i don't want to waste skiing time. Boarders always seem to spend more time than i would like, sat down.

  6. bummer.
six nations to look forward to tho. :upyeah:

  7. I retired from rugby at 8 as it bloody hurt. I started again at 17 as my head of 6th form was really into it and it got me out of loads of trouble keeping him happy. I retired at 18 as hangovers and rugby REALLY hurt.

  8. scotland turning up this year?

  9. don't know. the club teams aint doing to well at the mo.
hopefully they can improve on the wooden spoon this time around.

  10. i think Scotland might just surprise us all and nick a win off one or two from eng/ire/wal/fra. the new coach has made massive leaps forward with the squad. i think it'll be very competitive this year and France may well come in below Scotland but above Italy.

    my gut-feel is 1. Ireland, 2. Wales, 3. England, 4. Scotland, 5. France, 6. Italy

  11. take up track days in the summer and drinking in the winter!!

  12. Thanks for the photos :Vomit:.
You should try climbing it's great. I'm no lightweight but still enjoy it, there is a lot of technique involved. All the best with your recovery.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1

  13. im not so sure, @finm has made a good point re the club level, i think the world cup performance may have been a bit of a one -off, 'club on tour' sort of performance. More difficult to replicate back on the grind of a 6nations. Better than they were ill grant you, but the potential still to flatter a bit, and over promise/optimistic.
it will be interesting to see what the french do this year.

  14. Dylan Hartley is going to captain England. With his track record of ill discipline that should be interesting.

  15. Martin Johnson had a "colourful" record but he did alright as England captain.

  16. Very true.

  17. apart from the Ireland game, which conspiracy theorists may consider a thrown game in order to ensure England couldn't win :kissing: , Scotland were within a score of all their opponents last year and had a pretty decent world cup. i won't be taking any bets on the calcutta cup match this year (still owed a bottle of Scottish from a tight-arsed jock i used to work with from about 4 years ago!)

  18. Did he? What are the figures to support that - genuine query, not having a go.

The only stats i can find are a quote from a Tigers statement at ( ironically) a discipline panel hearing in 2001( and at which he was found 'guilty') but which suggests that between 1989 and 2001 he played 245 club matches, 58 internationals and two lions tours 5 matches, but was never once cited, sent off or had any sort of disciplinary finding against him.

He retired in 2005 ( 2004 from intl rugby), so were all his 'dirty years' in those three years 02>05?
