So, 1 month of both licence and Mutley ownership later and I've done 1'500 miles on urban, fast A roads, small country roads and motorways. My experience-o-meter is indicating just slightly above zero but at least headed in the right direction. Tomorrow I'm taking Mutley to Superbike School at Brands Hatch. Any advice? Preferably not suggestions for last words.
Enjoy it, the Superbike days are really well run and you'll learn a lot Wish I'd done a few sooner looking back but hey ho. As far as you go, drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and eat decent stuff. I usually take bananas, apples and flapjacks and just graze through the day, little and often. Avoid stodge and big meals, it'll just make you feel sleepy and bloated!
Slow in, fast out. Use all of the track (best to avoid the grass though, IME ;-) Stay relaxed as much as possible to avoid getting overtired. Have fun!
Enjoy it and ride to your ability not to other peoples as everyone is different and takes differing times / routes to improve
Assuming Level 1 you will be doing, it's not a track day (not even close) so don't think that's what it is. Also ignore the retards who wasted £500 on training and want to spend it trying to race and not listen to a word the instructors say. You get to laugh at them being taken off the track though, so that's always good LOL. We had a couple on my session, first corner they go bombing past like they are in a race and immediately got pulled up and put in the pit. Your ability will not matter, you know how to use the controls on your bike is enough, they will teach you the rest. There is no race involved in it, no one to beat and abilities don't matter - you will be mated up with another rider of similar skill level with a tutor between you, just personal gain of valuable track (and relevant to the road too) skills. You will gain what you put in, paying attention to the instructor in classroom and then your assigned on track tutor you will come away with completely feeling knackered and will have lost your chicken strips They will do a quick look over your bike while you are in having your first classroom lesson, and will cover up/fold in your wing mirrors (you won't need them) and I think tape over your speedo from what I remember. First run out you get "one gear" to play with concentrating on throttle usage Then a break Then another classroom session Then another run out on the track to practice what you just got shown in the classroom....and so on Also try not to pick up a puncture on route to the track, as I did and didn't realise due to the adrenalin going until about the third session when I realised that it wasn't me being crap, the rear tyre was flat - doh! Each session you go out and add another element into the mix, so throttle control first - then add in turning points, counter steering, positioning, using your eyes etc. Talking about target fixation, how to avoid it. That is the basic format of the day, classroom, practical and then a break - usually split up into three groups so that you are all doing one of the three things at a time. I think it was about 20 minutes of each, but its a full tiring day - did mine at Silverstone in the blazing heat. As said drink plenty along with a bit of grazing on fruit (bananas are good for potassium and Isotonic type drinks also are good for salt) It's bloody good though, worth every penny, I really should go back and do level 2 and 3 at some point but busy doing other training at the moment.
It was f*cking ace. Learned so much, improvement my skills hugely, wore my tyres right to the edge and scraped just a tiny bit of metal to boot (sic). Hoping to do level 2 on 15th Sept.
