I've seen it before and caught the last half hour or so. It's very good and makes you realise the risks those earlier drivers had to take.
It was a repeat although not billed as such. A good reminder of just how much work J. Stewart did towards changing safety standards back then.
Understand it was started by a faulty KERS unit. So all that co and co2 that will be saved by not burning fossil fuels in mainstream cars will be trashed by the first fire they cause after they make their way into production cars ;-)
That BBC programme was very interesting and highly depressing. It was the nature of many of the deaths that was sickening - being burnt alive in a fireball as you can't get out of your car must be one of the most horrible ways to go. Colin Chapman doesn't come out of this very gloriously. Seems incredible that so much death and injury happened and no one really seemed to care. The images of leaping cars at the Nürburgring were frightening, as was the on board camera footage. F1 seems to have hit a pretty good balance at the moment - quite exciting, unpredictable and still fairly safe, although if it is all about managing tyres rather than going as fast as you can, that does seem to defeat some of the point of it. Why wan't John Surtees knighted? Only person to be world champion on both 2 and 4 wheels.
I agree ^ it would be good to see a follow up programme featuring Niki Lauda and his later efforts to get the driver moved further back in the cockpit. I remember seeing the aftermath of an accident where the nose was ripped off entirely but mercifully not taking the driver's legs with it. The HANS device was a good move by Jackie I have to admit. It took some getting used to though, I remember one R. Barrichello was a bit anti. I think you're right about the tyres - Pirelli need to have a rethink before the end of the season. So was NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, he refused to wear one because (He said) it was uncomfortable and ineffective. The HANS device helps prevent basilar skull fractures, the exact injury that killed him :frown: Can`t believe he`s been dead over 10 yrs.
