1200 Front Brake Issue

  1. Not sure if anyone has had this but.....

Just glad to get home tonight! Decided to pop to Poole Quay as it was ok out and hadnt ridden for a couple of weeks. May be my own feck up though.

Pulled the bike out of the garage. Thinking about it now, the front brake seem quite tight on the discs but at the time I thought it was just one of the tyres coming up over the lip in my garage.

Rode off taking it easy. Didnt feel quite right. Then after about 2 miles I was going through our little town on a quiet road at about 20mph and suddenly the front brakes seemed to just come on, the red lights on the dashboard started flashing and I was stuck in the middle of the road with the front brake stuck on. Luckily my mate on his 916 was far enough back not to hit me and there were no cars. We had to physically drag the bike off the road as the front brake lever was as far out as it would go and the front wheel was solid and not moving.

As a bit of history, when I got the bike it had ASV shorty levers on which were lovely but not long enough and so I struggled to keep my fingers on them (clutch side especially). So a month or so back changed to some long levers (not Chinese cheapies, German ones cant recall the make). These were duly fitted and were fab. Much nicer feel, free moving..

After about 200 miles the only issue I had was that as I only use 2 fingers to brake, the lever came in too far and hit my other fingers even after using the adjuster wheel. So at the end of the last ride I think it was I turned the adjuster which goes into the boot and extended it so that the lever was out further. At the time I thought I had it perfect but not so sure now.

Anyway, after getting out the toolkit I managed to un-adjust the bit I had twiddled out and this released the front brake and the lever felt as it had before and the wheel moved no problem. We rode gingerly for about 20 miles and it has all felt lovely since.

So the question or questions are: Is this my own doing, did I wind the lever out so far that the pads were touching and ABS got confused and thought we had locked up? Should I never go near a bike again? It certainly scared the shite out of me....

  2. By turning the other adjuster in the boot out there would of been no ' lost motion' as you ride the bike and the fluid gets hotter it needs to expand into the resvoir
Because the lever was adjusted up so much the fluid had no where to expand into so it starts to apply the brakes ..... the hotter the brakes get the more the fluid expands thus locking wheels completely ..... until you back the adjuster thread back off .
I've done excatly the same ,but on the rear brake adjusting the lost motion out thinking I'm clever ..... 20 mins into ride rear disc it screaming hot .... good job I had the tools under the seat to turn the threaded bar back off again

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  3. Ah so me being a dick and not thinking then:sunglasses:

  4. Shit happens man ............... back to orginal fault of lever pulling in to far ....maybe worth doing full bleed and fresh fluid especially if fluid has had a good boil with the brakes getting so hot

  5. May have to go that way. Prefer it coming a bit far in now rather than being locked on though!
