1198 Front Brake Vibrating: Fix

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by luke1198, Sep 11, 2020.

  1. About 10'000 km ago I had a problem with vibrating front brakes. If I remember correctly, the vibration was strongest at about 90 km/h (probably matching the resonance frequency of the fork).

In my case, the problem was caused by a defect on the rim. One of the spokes on which the disk is fixed was out-of-plane by 0.07mm. This caused the disk to wear asymmetrically, hence causing a non-uniform force when braking. After machining the rim on-site I mounted a new disk. The other side was OK. The problem is completely gone.

I put two videos on peertube:

Below is a photo of my "on-site lathe" setup. I hope this can be useful for others.
