So with new tyres needed I decided to get the wheels painted while they were off, the rear one I did a treat, but the front had/has me confused, I tried to remove the calipers but they didn’t easily get out as the rim fouls it, ok I did push the pads back slightly and nicked the rim getting them out, obviously I don’t want to nick the rim going back in as it will have new paint, so does anybody have the defined way of reassembling the front wheel?. Went to Mallory park today to watch mates on a track day, some guy on a Multistrada was hooning around like a pro, he was very quick.
The pads need to go back nearly all the way, use a G clamp or similar and keep an eye on the reservoir level while you're pushing them back as it will obviously rise, I did this one caliper at a time to keep the level within limits.
Thanks, I did sort of remove once pad and unclipped it, no idea how it goes back in but I guess you have to put the pad in before the calipers goes over the disk. Thinking about it you could (I think) position the wheel approx with the disks off and slip them in? There off to paint the wheel so this might work.
The pads are a bugger to get back in, but if you look inside the caliper, it does make sense, one end hooks in under a recess while pushing the retainer spring down. You could even fit the wheel and unbolt the disks which may give you an extra half inch forward to slide the calipers in, then do the disks bolts back up ?
However, I can 100% assure you, if the pads are fully back, they do go in without touching the wheel, maybe put a cloth between wheel and caliper to be sure but I have done it twice, and its easy once you've done it the first time.
Thanks for your help, it will be a week or so before the tyres are back on so I will revisit this topic I am sure.
Put 2 layers of masking tape on the wheel to protect it right to the tyre for about 1/3 rim area As Wayne said pads all the way in and it’s fine Refit the wheel and spindle loose then lower weight onto front wheel to hold it then fit the calipers so you don’t have to worry about holding wheel in right place Changed my tyre 10 days ago...
