1260 Fuel Economy

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Bumpkin, Sep 19, 2018.

  1. What range should I be expecting out of my 1260 Mutley? Not sure how accurate the range meter on the dash is but currently looking like 170-180 miles to a tank full with the consumption running at mid to high 40s mpg.

Only just had it's first service yesterday (Ducati Coventry, I'm impressed with their attitude and facilities) so not yet fully broken in quite yet. Maybe once past 1000-1200 miles things will improve further.

Not disappointed with the mpg, just curious as what to expect. I don't own a motorcycle for the purposes of economical transport after all :D

  2. I now have 2000 miles on my 1260 and am getting 50mpg on average (as shown by the bike, I haven't bothered to do a mileage and volume check). Probably about 500 miles of motorway in the mix, the rest being mainly B roads in hilly places.

  3. on the last trip of 3000Km i was getting 50+ mpg and topping up at 160 miles with at least 4 litres left in the tank

  4. 130-150 to the light for me, with regular road riding on 1200. So 160-180 ish. Be interesting to see if the 1260 is different, given its a bit larger cc and different torque characteristics

  5. Depends how hard you ride.

    On my DVT - I get between hight 30's 38 / 39 to low 50's 51/52 on a 120 mile route that I ride.

Same route - just how wide open the throttle...

  6. the 1260 is great low down, looking at the app i was not really going over 6k RPM, no need to apart from some fast overtakes, could be why i get more MPG

  7. I understand from a tech at my dealers that the fuel pickup in the 1260 tank is low down on the forward left-hand side and that the fuel strip is somewhere near the rear of the tank above the level of the pickup so that reading empty, there is still a couple of litres in the tank - maybe not all pumpable though. This goes some way to explaining why filling up seems to take less fuel than I would have expected when the light is on and I have say 30 miles remaining range showing.

  8. Experience through three iterations of the water cooled Multi tells me that, just as you have found, there is more in the tank than the fuel gauge tells you. A recent example was last Monday. A lovely day so I went for a 25 mile ride to Chichester buy some cheese. I arrived with just 1 mile range showing on the dash but I wasn't overly concerned. When I filled up it took 18.55 litres, so nearly 1.1/2 litres still in there, good for another 10 - 15 miles.

  9. It depends - but my 1260 with 10K on the clock does 50+ mpg average. On a recent trip after a fill up we did 210 miles of mostly UK motorway just to get to the destination. The dash said I had 10m left and it took 18.5 litres to fill up, that the best I have had. Normally its about 180m and takes 16-18 ltrs to fill up. My light comes on at about 150/160m and it would seem there is around another 40-50m left in the tank.

  10. Never checked what mileage I actually get from a full tank but I seldom reset the average consumption, this runs in the mid 47's mpg whereas my 1200 DVT was mid 43's, similar type of riding for both, often with pillion and luggage, rarely long distance at a constant speed and more often than not "enjoying" myself in the twisties ;).

  11. I'm averaging 51 uk mpg on my 2015 dvt

  12. Wow. You are getting almost 200 miles between fill up?! :upyeah:

  13. Yes- from memory the range showing is around 240 miles when I fill up. That is mainly riding two up, it tends to drop if I'm on my own ;)

  14. Oh how I wish I could get these sorts of mpgs you dvt guys are getting :(
My 2012 bike usually gives me light on at between 130 and 150, same as bradders.
My first bike ran dry 7 miles after it showed zero range, so I don't risk it now, its too bleeding heavy to push far

If the 1260 will do 45 to 55 mpg that is 10mpg more than I currently get, and might stop my mates moaning how much fuel I use compared to them

  15. I always check my gas mileage. The dash's mileage estimates are always optimistic, but only by a few mpgs. When I ride around normally, I get about 47 mpg. On the interstate, doing 75 - 85 mph, I get about 35 mpg. For some reason this Multi likes mountain roads and elevation. On a recent trip to Colorado, 3 tanks of gas netted 51 mpg, 52 mpg, and 55 mpg!!
With the exception of hard interstate running, I can always go 200 miles between fill ups.

  16. Its not a bigger enduro tank, is it? LOL

Not matter how I rode the 1200 DVT over 8500 miles I could never get more than 180 before it showed <10 miles to empty.

  17. U.S. gallon is 3.7 litres a gallon, U.K. gallon is 4.5 litres.

You have more ethanol per gallon in the U.S. suru ? The majority of our unleaded is 95 ron (5% ethanol), super unleaded is 97% ron (3% ethanol)

US 1260 has 5.3 gallons tank but the U.K. has 4.4 gallons?

  18. Commuting into London I could get 150 miles, range would be showing almost zero and then fill up with about 18.5 litres
On a good run out in France it's nearer to 200-220 miles, although as a minimum I'd stop fill up with 25 miles range left.
In town work is a killer...

  19. Always good to have an excuse to ride 25 miles for cheese Peter! :joy:

  20. Yes, 5.3 US Gallon tank. We generally have 10% ethanol. My 1260 gets about 10 mpg better than my 2011 1200 got, which is crazy but true.
