Fuel Feed And Return - How Does It Work?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by chueewowee, Apr 6, 2016.

  1. Just to be clear, Does the y-piece in the fuel lines connecting feed and return (600ss wirth CV carburettors to be model specific ) have a directional non- return valve fitted to feed an return?

I need to know because I'm not sure what was my feed and return hose since dismantling, wonder if it matters, because I am about to fit an externalised fuel filter.
I imagine the y piece would have those valves.

Another quickie - concerning electronics, priming and start up , Is the system configured so as to disengage the starter motor until the system is primed?

  2. The Y-piece is just a Y-piece. It has no valves. The pump feeds fuel to the Y-piece and hence to the carbs. When the float needle closes the excess fuel goes up the other leg of the Y back to the tank. That's all there is to it. The filter should go between the tap and the Y-piece.
I'm not sure what you mean by the system being primed, it's a carbed bike not fuel injection. There is nothing to stop the starter being operated at any time.

  3. The pump runs all the time.

  4. OK lads. Gotcha. I'm clear now - pump should run all the time, and so it does. No valves in Y piece.
    Much as I hoped.
(my previous bikes didn't have the fuel pump and return - helpful to be certain about this one).
