Since the work was done on my cylinder heads the fuel gauge has been very erratic. Often when I fill up it does not show bars to the top, the next time I fire up it is full, then drops suddenly to 5-6 bars. The low rule warning light still seems to be fine, (although it always comes on a bit earlier than I want), and the fuel milage remaining countdown on the dash is fine. Is this something wrong with the mechanism or electrics? Any suggestions on a possible fix? (PS I've had new clocks and it worked fine both before ands after they were fitted)
Hi Chris, as you have an older bike, when you fit a new fuel sensor there will have to be an update to your bike, I replaced mine under warranty but didn't need the update as its a 2013 bike. Looks like another trip to the dealer buddy!
Had trouble with my fuel level sensor since the summer. Fuel level is all over the place after a fill up and then usually starts having a fit. The gauge flashes empty, the fuel sensor error appears on the roundel and an engine management warning light appears. Mostly it disappears after a while and normal service is resumed. However, it is getting more frequent and is starting to become seriously annoying. I need to get it fixed. I'll be having my belt service done next Spring so I wondering if it was worth hanging on until then. What I need to know is this: Do they need to remove the fuel tank for the belt service? If so, is it worth haggling over the labour costs to get the belt service and fuel sensor done at the same time?
Mine was the same so took it to the dealer and they replaced the sensor, also mentioned the starter button was a bit 'sticky' and sometimes stuck in !! they said they would replace the switch as well so had to wait for the part to come in.
Update - Ducati have agreed to supply a new part on goodwill warranty, I just need to pay to have it fitted. The service manager was saying it's due to the plastic parts swelling and sticking (which is why it's an intermittent fault), they have replaced a fair amount of them.
I have the tank off to change the filter just now and out of curiosity removed the fuel sensor to see if it was sticking. I can turn it from end to end and the internal float moves inside as smooth as you'd like, but I'll bet that when I put the bike back together the gauge will still blether
Chris, I fitted my warranty fuel sensor myself, it's not too bad, there are quite a lot of things that need to come off but I'm sure you could sort it! I could give you a hand! I will give you a chance to do some deep cleaning before the EMM!
Thanks for the offer buddy - They are doing the service anyway and the tank is already off to change the ABS brake hose for the new callipers.
Today I have fitted a new fuel gauge sender to my 2011 MTS 1200S. I didn't have to pay anything for it - Ducati UK supplied it free of charge. It's rather a fiddly job, undoing all the fairings/covers with dozens of little screws and putting them all back in the right order. Look forward to seeing if the gauge now works accurately. At the same time I fitted a new pair of tank side covers, as the old ones were a bit scraped and second-hand looking. The tank now looks pristine again.
Had my fuel gauge sender replaced as a courtesy as part of my 15k service. When I picked her up and filled up I was amazed when the fuel gauge showed full immediately. Not the usual two bars from the top followed by a drop to half before recovering over the next 20 miles or so. It's done this since she was new and I've never been certain how much fuel I've got. So the prospect of an accurate fuel gauge from now on is quite exciting really. Yep, you're right....I need to get out more.
