749 Fuel Pump Pulsing

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by paulm2930, Mar 29, 2018.

  1. Did some work on the bike recently, fitted new belts by myself for the first time and all was ok after this, fired up easy and no issues.
I then needed to take the alternator cover off to investigate an oil leak which was sorted, obviously the coolant needs to be drained and crank sensor removed to do this. Fixed the leak and put everything back together and when the ignition is turned on the fuel pump primes but after a few seconds it then pulses like it’s being turned on and off really quickly. Would a faulty relay do this? Or is it possible the crank sensor is faulty?
Anyone know what it could be? I e not touched anything else.

  2. Paul, relays can chatter and present faults like that, have a look at it, why not change it anyway?

  4. Great news, if you are interested, open the relay up you may be able to see the contacts burnt away or overheated pins on the connector. Obviously its for the bin anyway. Just found similar on my 748 and the 20A fuse connector/fuse holder for the fuel pump was getting hot enough to distort the plastic of the fuse. All due to slight corrosion, a break down avoided by checking the bike carefully in readiness for its mot next week. Always good to pull a few plugs and spray them with cleaner/contact preserving spray.
