Fuel usage

  1. Hi all

Before I phone my ducati dealer and make a tit of myself I thought I would do it here first.
The fuel light on my sf848 comes on between 90-100 miles. I keep reading reports of people getting 150 and more to a tank full. I fill the tank right up but am surprised that my fuel consumption is so bad compared to others.

I am commuting 25 miles a day on the bike so lots of stop start first/second gear riding but does it really make that much difference?

    Any comments welcome.
P.s. I am off out today so will check back later but any feedback would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

  2. I don't really fill mine right up and get 135-140 before the fuel light comes on. If i fill it up to the point fuel is sitting right up to the lip i get 150 miles before fuel light.
I do all types of riding including traffic and never seems to change the fuel usage in terms of milage per tank.
I now run a 14 tooth sprocket up front which helps a lot around town as second gear is much more useful.

  3. How many miles has your bike done?
Mine seemed to be more fuel effecient the more miles i did,

  4. Also what tyre pressures are you running?

  5. I never take any notice as normally out with a mate on a 1098 and he has to stop like every 10 miles

PS - i do notice it prefers the 'better' unleaded and goes further on a tank

  6. Fuel lights are notoriously inaccurate. Zero the trip every time you fill up. Then the next time you fill up you will know how much fuel you have put in and by subtracting that from the tank capacity you will know how much you have left. After a few fill ups you will know how much is still there when the fuel light comes on and a good idea of how far it could get you.

  7. Didnt realise the SF had a different tank and less oomph so uses less fuel than an 848, whichis 80-100 til the light from full

  8. +1 on zeroing trip, always have done for years....always look for fuel on the Monster at say 120 miles but only had the light come on once at 90 miles albeit a flat out run in the dark down the M74 Glasgow to Carlisle sitting at circa xxxmph constant........But if I am riding in the "Wilds of Wannee" then I will do a splash and dash when you see a fuel station cos you never know where your next one is and we don't want to run out now do we!!!

  9. Thanks for the replies everyone.
Maybe I need to take my bike in as I am getting the fuel light come on pre-100 miles every time.
I always zero the trip when I fill up but as far as i know the bike only does about 20 miles on reserve so I give it 10-15 miles with the fuel light on then fill it up again.

I think I will give the dealer a ring and see what they say.

    Cheers

  10. Derek

I just reread you post and have managed to get my head around what you are saying (I have a small brain.)
I must admit I just fill the bike up each time and don't even take note of how much is going in! doh!

Thanks for the advise I will pay more attention next time!

  11. You got standard cans on? That may make a difference

  12. Yes mate but not for long hopefully!
Fancy getting the carbon Termi's fitted but they are a bit expensive aren't they!

  13. Ar right, dealer then; my evo stank of petrol with Akros until I had a CJS special on the ECU

  14. Update.
Well I phoned the dealer and explained my concerns regarding the fuel usage.
They said the fuel light coming on between 90-100 miles is normal and this will vary depending on what sort of riding I am doing.
i guess 120 on a tank is not too bad although I am amazed that people are getting so much more than this. Mcn long term test report states the fuel light coming on at 160 miles! And I would imagine Mr Neeves gives it more welly than me! :)
Love the bike though so am willing to forgive it for now!
    Cheers for your replies.

  15. Another Ducati forum fuel thread shock!

After all these years wouldn't you think they'd get it right and go back to street bikes that can go 150 to 200 miles before needing fuel, the 916 to 998's manage to do it just fine. The Desmo was ridiculous at 50-60 miles and all of the 1098's I've ever seen go light on between 80 and 110 depending on speed and prone or upright riding, then another 20-30 on reserve, so 100 miles at worst and 140+ miles at best to a tank of spirited riding. It's not beyond the wit of man to fit 23L tanks instead of 15L tanks is it?

  16. My GT is shite too, steady will see the light on at 110, slightly harder sees it on at 90 miles. I have noticed a significant improvement with open cans, 45average before, 52 now, however it is early days so will be keeping an eye on this. Its my biggest ISSUE and on the continent services can be over 100miles apart, shite indeed.

  17. I would think the OP's round town riding is the problem. It'll make a big difference to mpg.

  18. Update.
I managed to get 128 miles from a full tank and filled her up today (actually ran out of petrol on the garage forecourt!)
Amazed at how much difference it makes to the fuel consumption on what type of riding I am doing.
I had a longer ride at the weekend so that must be what made the difference this week rather than my usual commute in heavy traffic.
Certainly not as bothered now knowing it is normal for the bikes to drink so much more fuel in town riding.
Just a shame the manufactures don't put bigger tanks on these bikes in the first place! :)

  19. Latest computation on my 848 after about 1200 miles of mixed riding including some spirited motorway blasts comes to about 8.8 miles per litre,or in new money about 40 m.p.g.
This would give a theoretical range on a full tank of about 140 miles.
Hope this is of some help bearing in mind my figures are rough gude only.

  20. Managed 158 miles to fuel light today. Best ever although me riding blooming slowly all the way from epsom to hastings because of the snow and cold weather. I don't think i got above 65 mph
