899 Gearing

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Richard Innes, Dec 27, 2021.

  1. Hi,
Can anyone advise on gearing/sprocket for more acceleration. Not to worried about top speed, but would like abit more down low.
    Thanks Rich

  2. Hi Rich,

I changed mine this year, went with the SITTA - HHS Ultra Hard Anodised 46 Teeth 520, Kept the front the same size and paired with 108 link DID 520 ZVM chain.

Mind you, I did it because I needed a new chain and had to get rid of the horrid standard looking sprocket, decided to go up a couple on the Back at the same time.

  3. That's wicked, thanks for the info.
How much difference has it made to the ride? I don't really get above 4th gear on a local run out, so wanted a bit more poke down low.
    Thanks Rich

  4. I am a lot more sedate on the roads these days so don’t tend to rip it like I once did, however it felt much better once I made the change. I would say it’s enough to notice a difference but not crazy that the front wheel wants to lift all the time.

Keep in mind I only got the Panigale a couple of years ago after 8 or so years out and the amount of cars and potholes these days is shocking so fast road riding is not like it was.

Did a couple of track days at brands, definitely felt better on track. Worth doing IMO and +2 is a happy medium, but worth doing your research on other options. Fairly sure I got some good insight by searching these fine forums.

  5. Yep, don’t go down on the front, but when I tried to go up 2 on the rear I couldn’t because the chain isn’t long enough, so I’d go up 2 on the rear but buy a new chain. The stock chain is shocking anyway. Also, looks like you have standard cans? The 899 is much nicer off the bottom with Termi’s and the upmap, fills in the bottom few thousand revs nicely. Expensive mod though, but cheaper than changing bikes

  6. Thanks Phill748
I have just ordered a 46tooth rear sprocket and a long talon rear chain.
I do have standard cans, butt iv removed the cats from inside and that did make a difference, it's free up the bike nicely, I just wanted a bit of a quicker rev range down low, as have changed from a yamaha mt09 to the 899. I absolutely love the bike so far, I'm also thinking of getting the ecu flashed and adding a sprint airfilter. Just need to look into mappers in the southeast.
    Thanks for your help .

  7. do you use the throttle mode in ‘high sensitivity’ as that makes it much snappier and nicer low down, also helps to put the plastic spacers in the throttle grip to remove slack, these changes and the throttle mode will make it about as responsive as you can really.

  8. Thanks Phil,
Do I access the throttle mode on the dash display? I run the bike in race mode at all times of riding, but have never played around with all the modes!!
To be honest I don't have a great deal of knowledge with the settings.
I have also seen alot about the throttle spacers, so I'll add these to my purchases.
    Thanks again

  9. Yep, I second the throttle spacers. Got rid of the throttle slack which I found to be much better.

  10. Thanks to both of you for your help, it's great to get advice off people that have already ironed out the issues and made the ride more fun.
    Thanks Rich

  11. I only had my 899 12 Months, it’s probably the one bike I regret selling the most, I dunno, something about it just got under my skin, the 959 was heavier, the V2 heavier again. I jumped back on a 899 last year and nearly cried having spent all the money on a V2 realising that for 90% of riding the 899 was just nicer

  12. @Richard Innes I can’t help with the gearing but as the others have said, throttle spacers are a great, cheap mod. Also, for me a day on the dyno made a world of difference to how the bike rode. My bike came with Termi’s, sprint filter and upmap to suit but when not riding quickly it became very tiresome with a poor throttle response. The remap smoothed all that out, also making it very aggressive when in race mode.

  13. @Bo01691
I think this needs to be the next port of call, I just need to find a specialist ducati dyno localish to me, I am super happy with the bike don't get me wrong, I just need that lil extra kick.
It's way more capable than me but I like to push everything I do to the limit.
It's been great joing the forum and hearing first hand from other owners what worth doing and what's not.
    Thanks

  14. I hate it when that happens. I have only owned my 899 for 3 weeks and haven't spent that much time on it due to the weather!!! And I won't ride in the rain as im way way to ocd for that, but I can see exactly what ur saying, its just such a great all round bike and looks so so sexy too which always helps, it's actually quite confidence inspiring too.
I will get it where I want it eventually its just gonna take a lil time, its only done 5k miles on a 15 plate, so it's a good base to start from.

  15. -1 tooth on the front is roughly equivalent to +3 1/2 on the back so could be done without changing the chain assuming it’s not stretched too much.

Either less teeth on the front or more teeth on the back both give more acceleration.

You don’t need a Ducati specialist for the mapping. Look at Steve Jordan for Dyno work in the south east

  16. Thanks Simon,
I think I'm gonna apply the new 46 tooth rear sprocket and new chain, then take it for a dyno.
Has Steve Jordan got a Website that you know of?.
    Thanks Rich

  17. This….
My thoughts exactly, have tried loads of other bikes but nothing has persuaded me to part with my 899, now I’ve got the BST’s on it and K-TEC shock I love the little bugger even more :D :upyeah:

  18. Hi Poucher.. I have seriously been thinking of changing the wheels. What made you go with BST’ over DYMAG or O.Z. Any recommendations on where to buy them as everyone seems to import which takes forever.

  19. Where do I start

I had originally ordered a set of Oz Gass from one company and after a long wait they refunded my money back to me, but that’s another story

I ordered these from Bike HPS, Giles Harwood the main man there is a great guy to deal with, but he was dead upfront with me about deliveries and your correct, it did take forever, over 3 months in fact.
Oz are made in Italy as you know, but they would not commit to a delivery date, the BST’s are made in South Africa and Giles had more faith in them actually delivering when they said they would even if it was a long wait.
Link to my original post when they finally turned up if you haven’t seen it…..

    https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/at-last-the-bst’s-have-arrived….86680/

You can see my thoughts here and that of other forum members on the benefits of the BST wheels, basically they improve every dynamic aspect of the bike, which is not surprising really as they are 6.2kgs lighter than the standard cast wheels.
In a way, the Oz wheels not turning up did me a favour, because if you’re going to shell out on a set of lighter wheels, you may as well get the lightest wheels you can and that’s carbon ones :upyeah:

Very spendy mod though at almost £2,700 ( plus another £100 for the rear Galfer wavy disc! ) but you will feel the benefits of these far more than a Termignoni exhaust system imo
The cost and waiting time for new wheels explains why you very rarely see any second hand ones for sale, they are just snapped up straight away, nobody wants to wait over 3 months for a new set.
Good luck if you decide to push the button on some :upyeah:
