I'm hopefully going to get my A2 licence very soon and I have my eyes on a Monster 695. My main concern about getting the bike is getting it restricted. As I will have my A2 it would have to be limited to 47bhp (35kW) however the power-to-weight ratio would be over the limit. So my question is, do I have to get the bike restricted to 33bhp (25kw) or is it possible to get it restricted to 44bhp (33kw) in order to make the bike legal?. I also don't know how the bike is restricted e.g via the ECU, baffles, washers, stopper on the wire.......
If you have an A2 licence you can't get a bike restricted to any more than 50% of the original power output, so the original bike must be under 94 bhp. (so in theory you could ride a 748 on an A2 licence) Most restrictor kits on newer bikes consist of a remapped ECU and a throttle restrictor, you will also need an installation ceritificate from the dealer who fitted it to show to Police if you are ever pulled over. You are right looking at the rules you would have to have it further restricted to meet the 0.2Kw/kg power to weight target. The other alternative is to wait until you are 24 and do direct access. On this list the 695 Monster is not listed as an A2 potential bike http://stijnbankras.nl/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/dsa-motorcycle-mtv-jan13.pdf
Thanks for replying. The spec for the bike wherever I look is 73bhp which is clearly less than 94bhp so it should be applicable for restriction. I suspect that the reason why it isn't on that list is because at 47bhp the ptw ratio will be illegal (Plus those are the only bikes allowed for bike tests). Going back to restrictors again, the bit I don't fully understand is whether the restrictor can be set anywhere betweeen 33bhp and 47bhp or does it have to be one of those set values?
I know this sounds kinda silly what with it being a Ducati forum and all but have you considered one of these? KTM 390 Duke ABS 2013 - 390 Duke i saw one in redline last week when I took the smr out for a spin and I couldn't believe how nice and trick they looked to be honest. i reckon I'd look for one of those but each to they're own, I understand the want for a Ducati but honestly by the time you restricted such a low strength engine it'll feel flat and not very ducati-ish anyway.
Oh, and they do them with orange wheels so they look even more like a 'mini beast' (arguably the most anticipated naked bike for years) ktm have catered well for the A2 bracket if you ask me
My biggest issue is there are no KTM dealers around where I live. The main reason I was considering the monster was that the dealer where I got my current bike from has a monster 695 2006 with 900 miles on the clock for £3500. There is a Honda garage but I find them boring.
You should have a look at the Suzuki Gladius 650, looks like a Monster and has a V twin. I did my test on one earlier this year. We learnt on a pair of them (one was restricted) and none of us could tell which one was which.
Hmmm, 'Gear 4' are probably the nearest KTM dealer in Peterborough, what's that, about 30 odd miles? im not saying totally discount Ducatis but for an A2 license unless you absolutely have to have a 695 monster there are better bikes that are newer out there that may fit the bill. Then when you want a ducati at least you can get something that really floats your boat. in fact looking at that list even the ktm 690 Duke (great bike) is 'restrictable', maybe the Hypermotard 795 could be? That's only about 70bhp to start with isnt it? id definitely have a look at that little 390 though an even the 690, maybe call a couple of other ducati dealers and see what they've done in regards to Ducatis
