The recommended grease for many jobs including the rear wheel nut is Shell Retinax HDX2 Where can it be bought ? and does anyone know what other manufacturers equivalents are ? Thanks

Generically known as 5th wheel grease I believe. Any commercial vehicle garage will use it and may, as they did for me, give you a big enough dollop to last for a long time. Andy
don't know what c.v. grease is, but Shell Retinax HDX2 is listed for numerous tasks including the rear wheel, which is my next requirement.
This is CV grease, not fifth wheel grease. Fifth wheel grease is similar, but has a higher moly contented. There's only about 3 grease manufactures in the UK, and the majority of grease will come from one of these plants. Shell, Castrol, Texaco, Comma, Millers, Morris, JCB etc etc branded grease, all comes from one of the main plants in the UK. Call in to your local Autofactor and pick up a 500g tub of CV grease. It should be black in colour and have a consistency of butter at room temp.
another one using the "5th" wheel grease. i use this on all metal to metal parts with high friction and so far have had no reason for changing it. i use copper slip for tightened steel bolts where no locktite is used. the 5th wheel grease for the rear wheel nut, washer, spindle and hub will be fine.
As for the OP I found that you cannot buy Shell Retinax HDX2 and that is because its not made any more! I contacted Shell and asked for their equvalents to all the greases that are recommended in my workshop manual and the next day I got a reply saying that all the product names I'd quoted are obsolete but they gave the following replacement information: Shell Retinax HDX 2 -replaced by Gadus S2 V220AD 2. SHELL Alvania R3 -obsolete. Nearest current UK alternative is Gadus S2 V100 3. SHELL Retinax LX 2 -replaced by Gadus S3 V220C 2.
