A few months ago when I put a Mosfet reg/rec on my 1098R I managed to strip a thread on the oil cooler bracket that the RHS fairing bolts to. £80 new, which I didn't fancy. Not much on eBay so I thought it was worth trying a helicoil for the sake of a £20 kit. I've never used one before, but it worked a treat. I'll keep an eye out for a bracket, but this little kit is a great addition to the garage.
Well £25 actually, but I think he knocked about £1.50 off the listing. I was paraphrasing Here They do smaller kits cheaper and although I only needed the M5 helicoil for this job, I thought it better to buy the full set and be future proof.
Don't think it was me tbh. I think it may have been on the cusp before I bought the bike. I've never stripped a thread in my life before this, but with this being an M5 into aluminium, it wouldn't take much. I only 'nip' my fairing bolts up as a norm.
When I had a 1098 that same thread failed. I too now have a helicoil set in the cupboard. Have not needed it since. That bracket is made of monkey- metal!
I’ve never stripped one either, but sometimes you inherit them, like when I did the oil change on that KTM, could tell the original owner had fcukd it up because the plug had to be wound out all the way with a spanner and shards of aluminium were flaking off as it was coming out, turned into a right p.i.a.!!
