Hello From Sunny Grimsby

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by FatAlan, May 23, 2018.

  1. Although I have been registered on the forums for quite a while I've never said hello or commented or even liked some of the amazing bikes I see on the pages of this forum.

After years of procrastination and not buying a Ducati I have decided that the time has come.

Because my life operates under tight budgetary controls and restrictions I have chosen to do a very long term build starting with a few base components of an S4 Monster. At this stage, I have bits and pieces but I lack key components such as wheels. I'm not sure if I'm doing something really stupid or something really fun at this stage but essentially I want to build myself a bike from scratch. This is something that I have done before with a GSXR 1000 powered SRAD but the GSXR ended up looking like every other SRAD. No personal stamp I guess.

As you can probably tell by my incessant ramblings I am still at the stage of "I can't believe I've just spent a load of money on some bits" and "what am I going to do next". This was why I wanted to say hello. Chances are I will be asking questions throughout the build process and wanted to say hello rather than the (seemingly standard on Forums in recent times) just asking questions.

The good thing about this Forum is that nearly everything that I might wish to know has been asked before so I will always search before asking.

    Thanks again,

    Alan

  2. From August 2016? What took you? Anyway welcome fat Dave :)

  3. Back in August 2016 I nearly purchased a 748 so I joined the forum. As the bike turned out to not be quite what it appeared to be I went off in a different direction and purchased a ZX7r instead. I didn't realise it was that long ago though. Time flies when you are having fun!

Thank you for the welcome El Toro!

  4. I have a set of high level link pipes, one decent silencer an one damaged one (quite bad) no mounting brackets with the carbon heat shields.
If you are interested when you get to that stage pm me.

  5. Great stuff - Thanks Higgy748. I will probably do a build thread on here. I recognise that it will be a very boring thing to read but it will keep me motivated! It's always difficult to go completely off track and do something different/give up when the world is watching.

  6. Welcome and enjoy!

  7. Welcome, from just up the road near Caistor / Rasen!

There are a few of us from round these parts, similarly afflicted. You'll find Adam @ V-Duo and Italia Moto in Lincoln very helpful if you need specialist help, or for spurious forum-wisdom we're all here with misleading advice that will cost you time, money and your dignity.

I take it you have a bin?

  8. Welcome back and welcome into the mad house

Red is best and for now could we have some parts/bin pics it’s a forum law of which you should be familiar with :motorcycleduc:

  9. Well..I'm guessing here but is the bin my parts stash squirreled away under the worktop in my shed? If so it's probably going to a disappointment to most as its full of odd bits of GSXR that I have accumulated over the years that are probably going to put on a popular international auction site in order to purchase the missing bits I need.

Photos of what I have will follow. Prepare to be disappointed though. Right now I'm having a "what have I done?" internal discussion with myself. In many ways, this is why I have gone "public" with the project - to keep my spirits and motivations up.

So.. what do I have? Very little - forks, frame, the bottom end of a 916, loom, a front wheel, back end, rear swingarm (double sided) and some brakes with a few other bits and pieces. Yep.. this is a real bare-bones back to basics build. On the plus side, this does give a lot of opportunities to build something silly. My initial plan was to just build up factory standard S4 but looking at some of the parts I need I think I might go a different route. Not drastically different though. I'm not one for grabbing angle grinders and welding masks at 9 am on a Sunday morning :).

Fire3500 - was my definition of bin correct or very wrong? This is all new terminology for me! There are some wonderful roads for bikes in this area - I think that's why there are so many great machines hidden away. Summertime in Lincolnshire is awash with the sounds of exhausts in the sunshine.

Ducbird - Because I completely lack bodywork I have been looking at red bodywork. I know that seems a little predictable but I'm sure that I have read somewhere that the first Ducati has to be red? The problem is I love yellow bikes. And black. White bikes too! Its all too much choice for me at this stage.

So, photos will follow. As my plan is deviating slightly from a straight S4 build up I think I need to plan and stick to it. The not keep to that plan and spend 3-4 times more than I plan to. I should really stick to a plan though.

  16. Welcome along @FatAlan :upyeah:

I'm sure you'll find your feet on this forum soon enough. It liiks like @Fire3500 & @Ducbird have started pulling you in to line already :joy: Do yourself a favour and keep Ducbird happy by posting a pic or two, she's unlikely to give you any piece else ;)

On a slightly different note, there are a few of us meeting up for a ride out to the Lincs Italian Motorcycle Show on Monday if you fancy meeting up with some like minded folk and enjoying a nice run out.

There are a good few of us from the Area on here and a few that like to meet up and have a ride out regular too... Feel free to pop along to the 2018 Lincolnshire Meets and Ride Out's thread and introduce yourself there also :upyeah:

  17. Thanks, Ben. I have been on a few of the Lincs ride outs historically on a host of different bikes. This year I will be out of action due to a combination of health issues and a motorcycle that is in bits! This is why I have decided to do a ground-up build. If I cannot ride a bike I may as well have some quality shed time with one.

I will, however, take a trundle down the Motorcycle show Sunday. That sounds like a wonderful idea. I will probably be in the family Saab. Maybe next year I can ride there.
