Help And Advice 1963 Ducati 48 Sport

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Scooby Dont, Jun 3, 2016.

  1. Hi

I have a project and need a couple of pointers on some aspects of the bike

Its a 1963 Ducati 48 Sport and is coming along nicely, I need advice on:-

Front Shocks, anyone out there who will be able to refurb these? If a pic is required then please give me a shout and I will upload a couple.

Cables, I do not have any cables for the bike only half of the throttle cable, where/who is the best place/person to get these made?

Gaskets/Seals, again I dont want to use corn flakes box for the gaskets.

Technical Data for the bike anyone out there that may have this

Any help is always appreciated, thanks in advance

    Chris

  2. Chris, get hold of a copy of Old Bike Mart (The Autojumble in your armchair, the world of classics at your fingertips Old Bike Mart Magazine or one of the Classic Bike, Classic Mechanics, there are a lot of company's advertised in them which should be able to help you out with the cables (eg....www.carrotcables.co.uk), fork refurbs (e.g......Pitted Forks - Motorbike Fork Rechroming - Motorcycle Fork Refurbishment - Bike Fork Repair - UK etc I am not endorsing the above I just picked them out to try and help out, good luck

  3. Thanks for the reply, just gave pitted forks a call...ouch that hurt.

Note to self, dont buy such a rare bike and try to get parts.

I was going to try and bring the bike back too original spec but Im having second thoughts as I will probably ending up chasing parts for years, this is now the look I am going for

I know the cafe racer look will split a room but for me its the quickest option and the easiest way to get hold of most parts bar the ones mentioned in my first post.

  4. Personally I like it......its one of Pepo's Radical bikes
I am building one of his Radical Ducati bikes from a ST2's at the moment, so no, cafe racer style looks good

  5. I ❤️ Pepo's bikes, and they don't comply with the trend in retro hipster brat cafe tracker pipe wrap crap . That's a stunning looking little special, hopefully when I get my finger out my little 350 bevel will be almost as nice.

  6. Your both doing nice projects,

@JOn3s it is hard sometimes, I seem to spend more time at looking at what I want it to look like than spending getting it to look like that )

Can I just ask, in the picture I put up do you think the frame is painted or powder?
Looks like paint to me but I may be wrong.

  7. The colour match looks v.close, I'd say painted the same as the rest of the bike.

  8. Be worth contacting an old friend of mine Nigel Lacey? www.laceyducati.co.uk
Nigel is a bit of a guru for all things old and Ducatiist.

  9. I would second that and agree its painted, you would find it difficult to replicate that colour in powder coat.
Ducati red frame paint code is (PPG) 473.101

  10. Hi,

Story so far on the 48,

    • Emailed Pepo, frame is painted, confirmed our thoughts, gave me a couple of other pointers too. Which was appreciated.
    • The frame is due to go to fabricators on Monday for Rear Set Foot Pegs.....and boo hoo frame chop (I dont like doing this..killing its originality)
    • Sent pics to a fork specialist and they freely gave me advice on forks and how easy they are to strip and repair.
    • A work mate was an x employee of dream machine, begging him at the minute to call in a favour...thanks for the paint colour M55russ
    • Piston on order

    Bad Points,
    • Cant get the stator/magneto, whatever you want to call it, off both the engines I have
    • Both engine casings have suffered a loose chain and damaged them so 1 will need to be repaired
    • Gasket Set...I give up..Will give your mate a shout SilverNige (Thanks)

    Questions,

I dont want to copy Pepo's exactly and this is what "small" changes I want to make but wanted feedback first.

Wheels, Gold rims or keep black?
Number Plates, White or a coloured contrast?
Exhaust, Original or racing?(I do have original pipe)

Thanks for any feedback and I will put pics up soon of the progress

  11. Hows this project going now?

I just bought a Sport 48 Barn Find. It is virtually complete but very rusty. I've had it running though and even ridden it up my drive! The magneto cover came off OK with a cheap puller from Toolstation although the retaining nut is left hand thread. I undid it with a rattle gun.

Very interested in how you got on with the forks. I have no idea where to start....
! TBH I have no idea even if they are hydraulicly damped. Did you need any special parts or was it all stright forward?
    Best wishes
    Douglas

  12. Hi Douglas

I have a few Sport 48's - one fully restored and a couple of barn-finds too that I intend to restore and possibly turn one into the radical Ducati type cafe racer.

It would be great to help each other with finding parts / spares and how to get some of the stuff done - so I have PM'ed you with my email deatils.

    Drop me a message sometime...

    Dave
