I've recently bought a 748 with a 996 engine fitted, I got it cheap knowing it wasn't 100% problem is the neutral switch was wired to the frame which meant the neutral light stays on permanently but the bike rode fine, I wired the neutral switch up as it should be and yes when you put it I to gear it goes out but the bike cuts out like its starved of fuel after ten meters is this an ecu problem? Not sure weather the wiring loom is from a 748 or a 996
You have to ask why the neutral switch was wired the way it was. Could be a miss matched or poorly wired loom or a remote possibility it is the side stand switch but the symptom doesn’t sound like it. Side stand switch would be an on or off cut out. Does the 996 engine have twin injectors ? If it does the loom should be from a 996 because the 748 only had single injectors. There are a couple of people on the forum who have done this sort of build so hopefully, some informed answers will be coming along. Andy
Seems a big coincidence that you sort out the neutral light and then get the cutting out - although being in gear (or thinking it was or wasn't) would all be ignition related and so instant cut out, Blocked fuel filter? Dodgy fuel pump? Wot happens after it cuts out? Can you just restart it, or do you have to wait? If so, possibly something overheating?
Can you put the wiring back the way it was easily? This will confirm whether the cutting out is a separate new problem from the wiring/ light issue or related to your changing the connections?
Do as Jez says ^^^ and then start it and run it. That way we’ll know whether it’s your movement/rewire of the neutral circuit or something else.
