749 Help Identifying Some Parts

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Nostromo, Jul 25, 2018.

  1. Hi guys
I've bought a 749s with lots of bits on it, just wondering what brand they are, I have receipts from dealers but they are in generic terms, main one is the ohlins, I'm wondering if they are genuine or just painted. others are the rear sets and the cf tank. may start a separate thread on tidying this bike up if anyone's interested. 2. Forks are not Ohlins - painted Showa.
    Is that a carbon tank?

  3. The forks and shocks look stock to me and just painted. Maybe they have ohlins internals and the slider a gold nitride finish?
    @RickyX , @Exige have a lot of knowledge on these bikes :)

  4. Yes carbon tank, yup fork sliders are gold, that's what threw me, rear shock is a showa. Cheers

  6. Rearsets are made by RCM and the tank is made by Evotech. Suspension parts are stock as mentioned :upyeah:

  7. Thankyou!

  8. So no standard Ohlins on a 749s as you would get on a 999s?

  9. By gum, that's been dipped in glitter!

Yes, help the thing back to full strength and we'll all get behind you. A 749/999 is a wonderful thing <3

  10. probably but them's not the ohlins forks. The ohlins fork bottoms are noticeably different.

It won't take a lot to polish up, and if fairness I can see what the original owner was trying to do with it, so its still a good buy, and like fire3500 says, with all the help on here it's not a million miles away either. :upyeah:

  11. Only the 749R has Öhlins suspension.

  12. If the tank is full carbon fibre, then I would guess at QB Carbon. They used by stock tank in 2003 for the moulds, in return I got a free carbon tank.

    Hope this helps.

  13. The tank isn't stock shape as you can see... It's an RS look made by Evotech.

  14. Doesnt look like a standard tank shape to me

  15. Who, said the QB Carbon tank was stock shape, sorry if I confused anyone. They used my tank to mould the lower area, mount points, ignition area etc, and then shaped the top section to look like the WSB tank at the time.

I'm still confident it's a QB tank, will dig out some picks of the tank etc

  16. QB Carbon tank ..... Looks close to me.

Looked for a good pic of the Evotech tank and this is the best I found:

  18. Just stripped the bike down, so I can fit new belts this weekend, tank looks like the qb one posted above.
On another note, the housing for the belts is quite grubby, the cams too, can I use normal degreaser or something less abrasive? IMG_20180726_184556308.jpg IMG_20180726_184436753.jpg IMG_20180726_184444814.jpg IMG_20180726_185000344.jpg IMG_20180726_185004905.jpg Cheers.

  19. Do you know the base for the fuel cap, 8 bolt jobby? I want to change the naff one that came with the bike.cheers

  20. I have the same rear sets on my 749. I was told they were copies of the ones Leon Haslam used when he raced the Highland Spring 999rs in BSB many years ago as he used a road shift pattern. No idea if it true or not, probably not but it sounded good to me when I bought them! Also the closest I could get to the proper factory 999rs hangers which cost big bucks. Foot pegs are very close to factory too.
