In need of a bit of help, me and three mates were making our way down to Spain when on the motorway approaching Millau it started to snow, cutting a long story short three of them went down two are ok but my other mate has damaged his ankle, to the point where he feels he can't ride his bike back and the way it's swelling I'd feel the same. Anyway I'd like any advice on how to get my mate and our bikes back home. He's been in touch with the RAC and they informed him that as it happened on French soil they'd have to charge a £160 + £1 per mile. Also my mate doesn't want to seek medical help until he gets home. So we're looking into hiring a van any suggestions or alternatives please.
Thanks @Cream_Revenge but were slightly snow bound at the moment in a village called Aumont Aubrac on the A75.
God sounds like the van is the idle plan but that will surely mean whoever hires it. Has to drive to england, ditch said mate & his bike at hospital. Then drive back & drop van off & do the ride again with your own bike?!? Shitter but accidents happen'
Got repatriation or sick driver cover? Check the policy. Also, has the bike been recovered or on the mway? If you are covered you are covered , there should be no additional charges. Guessing options: Fly a mate out to ride it home, fella goes pillion One-way van rental to port Leave bike at hotel (hopefully locked and safe, go buy some locks) and fly back Man up, strap it up tight, wear trainers and ride it back
Is the bike damaged ? If so and he's going to claim on the insurance I suggest you get them involved now they will arrange repatriation of the bike.
Take the injured rider to a French hospital. They are great places, easily as good as the NHS, and you will find that most of them will have some English speaking staff. Assuming that you have a EHIC then you might have to pay out but will get some (probably 70%) back from the system. You are about 200km to the east of me but the weather where you are and I am is very different, there are ski resorts over that way! I have PM'd my landline number if I can help, but I don't have a van and my trailer is a small domestic one.
After thinking about it, if you take your mate to a doctor (GP) then he will pay €23 for the consultation. The doctor may tell him to get an x-ray if he can't diagnose what the problem might be. You should be able to claim the €23 back from the NHS on return as the UK is still in the EU. Most doctors in France do not require appointments, you turn up and get seen in no time at all.
