Hi Just Joined And Need A Little Help With My 1198s

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by DE10R, Jul 31, 2024.

  1. Hi i have had my 1198s for a while now. It is well maintained only done about 9k but I do use it on track days. Unfortunately the big end ( I think) packed in down park straight on the warm up lap yesterday. So I am looking at a rebuild. Just wondering if anyone had any parts/advice on what to upgrade whilst its apart. I hope it hasn’t done the heads or crank as it may end too expensive to sort.

Couple of photos and the debris below, thanks anyone for any advice.

  3. It'll be expensive.
Rebuilding these bikes needs some special tools, and information on tolerances, otherwise your bike will grenade again.
IMHO- it's not a first time mechanics job.
I'd go to a specialist like desmowerx on YouTube ( no connection to me )

  4. Agreed. Nasty mate.

Find a good Indy mechanic. I’ve found local dealers don’t have the expertise nowadays for older bikes.

I’ve not had a diagnosis yet but my horizontal head internals are likely to need some serious surgery due to a snapped belt so I feel your pain.

  6. from your wording it sounds as though you've carried out "a build" before/not afraid of a build. There are many of us on here that can help if you decide to go that route. Assuming you will continue on track days then one lovely and thoroughly worthwhile mod is to change the gearbox internals (there used to be at least 2 options in the UK, others will provide links or me given time - BSD rings a bell). You also have a choice of pistons but O.E.M. are pretty good.

  7. Cheers for the info, I live in Leeds so have a local Ducati specialist who is happy to do the work. I just don’t have time to do it myself (joys of kids).

I am just waiting for the initial damage report to find out what’s needed. My worry is the crank and heads.
Sorry to hear about your belt issue BigJim.

I have seen the Nova box but they are about £2500 plus vat new. But agree the gear box is a weak point. I didn’t run a quick shifter for that reason. I will give BSD a call in the morning to see if they have any.

I will be gutted if it’s toast as I love the bike. As it’s getting on a bit getting parts seems to be a bit of a challenge.

  8. Welcome and enjoy.

Good luck with the repair/ rebuild.

  9. I'd speak to rich at louigi moto, he's built a few engines for me now all have been 100% reliable after the rebuild, he even let's you strip ya own motor of you want too.

  10. Agreed. Also Desmo Market (Italy) on the web for parts.

I was told approx £1300 worst case for sorting out one head.

I think bottom end is going to see you for more but obviously neither of us will know without diagnosis.

I had the QS removed from mine. I like using the clutch and had read they don’t get on well with the gearbox.

  11. Thanks for that I will give them a try. Hopefully have an idea of what parts are required by next week.
