I have recently acquired a 748 from 1995 that has been stood for years. One of the jobs on the recommissioning list was new chain and sprockets so I ordered a standard set of sprockets and chain from the very helpful folk at Bike Torque Racing in Frome. Kit turns up yesterday afternoon and I get straight to work. Old sprockets and chain off no bother. New rear carrier and sprocket assembled. Front sprocket on. Go to fit the pre-cut chain (94 links as standard) and it wont fit. Scratch head. Check old sprockets. Same number of teeth (14/38). Check old chain, 96 links! Called Bike Torque. They checked and said it should be 94 but might be an error (given a 96 link job was removed and the sprocket set up was identical) so would dispatch a new 96 link chain in the morning (today). Overnight the head worm started. I kept checking various sites, all saying 94 links. This morning I checked the rear hub. The axle looked right, sitting below the center point line but the brake calliper holder was at full adjustment with no visible 'hole' for a zip tie to secure the brake hose. Checked the rear hub and it was incorrectly rotated. Put this at the correct rotation and bingo, 94 links sitting happy with plenty of adjustment and the axle sitting nicely below the line. Called Bike Torque to stop them sending out a 96 link job and all good. Every day is a school day, especially when spannering on a bike with an unknown past.
