My niece has expressed an interest in getting a scooter, in particular a Vespa, when she turns 17. I suggested to her dad that it would be cool to get a proper old one and do it up; he's a former mechanic and can deal with the engine and I'd do the rest. That was the plan until I started scanning ebay for a suitable donor... Jesus H Christ, have you seen the price of these old rustbuckets?! She's getting an Aprilia Habana and liking it
Couple of friends have old vespas, and they are pretty reasonable spanner monkeys, but still have to carry an almost full tool kit and spares whenever they go out - wouldn't recommend that for a 17 year old. +1on the aprilia engined scooter, much more likely (use the word loosely) to be reliable. They used to be cheap as to buy ... Now your get a crap one for about a grand!! I used to like the old LI 150s? Lambretta . Used to be able to buy them cheap now forget it! Colleague has a Vespa px 200 .. He's always working on it at work at lunch! If you follow a scooter rally back you will often see a string of breakdowns! I like them myself but wouldn't want another money pit! Get her a new one or newish one Cheaper and more reliable . If she gets one that breaks down she will loose interest!
