What's the best way of refurbing these covers? I'm concerned about how to go about this, due to the alternator wiring on the other side - I don't want to risk damaging anything. Best done carefully by hand? I'm thinking about etch prime / paint as a finish - would that be wise? Interested to know how others have tackled this.
If I didn't want to remove the alternator coils, I would have left it on the engine, then carefully rubbed it down to bare ally and polished it. But you could alternatively bolt the gasket face onto some plywood; block the gearshift hole; silicone mastic a disc over the sight glass; slide a bit of garden hose over the cables and then get it blasted.
Thanks Al, good advice. Unfortunately I had to remove it, so I could unbolt the starter motor (was also in a terrible state).
