Hypermotard 1100 Crank Weight.

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by comfysofa, Apr 18, 2018.

  1. As above. Im not sure anyone can definitively answer this but, is there a difference between the evo's crank (the series 2 hyper) and the s (the series one hyper)

Part numbers are different but. Half my engine (the internals) are with Ducati John. He has a crank from a series one and has compared it in every way to my knackered crank and said from a dimension's point of view its the same. Bore and stroke is the same so the only other thing is the weight. Assuming its that, then the crank can be sent for balancing and in some cases he says is better for it...resulting in a slightly smoother engine....

As he has a series one crank their and there are no evo cranks available that i can see apart from brand new ones (1200 quid eek) and as a he says a custom balanced one might be better...so, digressing as i do....any differences anyone knows about...??

  2. Can he not weigh both cranks ?

  3. I have :)

  9. Thanks exige but that confirms what I already know. The evo sp crank has a different part....what ducati john is asking is "does anyone know if there are any differences bar the part number" as he cant physically see any...and suspects weight might be the only thing....hence getting the crank balanced...

  10. I was only helping Creamy - Creamy - useless info dude

  11. What's the Evo SP part #?

  12. Well, thank you very much all the same! :)

  13. Have to look it up...but looks like all the second gen motors are different...

  14. Surely that crank won't only fit your bike? Just need to find what else it's in to help widen the search?

  15. That's right...it's in the newer generation multis and the Minster evo 1100...

  16. if you are 'building' a engine ....why wouldnt you balance the crank?........but its not just about the weight of the crank, its relevant to the weight of the rods, pistons, shells, even the circles for the small end come into the equation and all these items should be paired/matched in weight too.

you cant either just chop a load of metal off, orbit a lighter crank,

for example if you tried to fit a 1098R crank to a 1198 without the matching rods or you end up adding metal to the crank.....

and its not just a bout a weight on scales...its about a dynamic weight including bobs to simulate the weight of the above items

the difference between assembling and building.

  17. @andyb i think the point is getting missed.....its not that i "wouldnt" get the crank balanced. The question is, is does anyone know of anything other than weight (from what can be seen - with my knacked crank (an evo crank) and a series one crank (one that ducati john has spare), with them both sitting physically alongside each other, apart from the part number. At the moment its possible weight thats the only deciding factor between the two...and, if it is, then yes, it'll go off to be balanced....

  18. Maybe ask on the monster forum if there is any difference between the old and new types?

  19. Well, thats why i posted in the technical section so everyone would see it....
