Hypermotard Oil Leak

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Neight, Feb 11, 2021.

  1. I bought a 2010 hypermotard 1100 evo with 16k miles that I noticed was leaking a tiny bit of oil on the left engine cover. Further inspection revealed that while running I felt air pressure coming out of a hole that looks like a cover bolt goes there. I tried putting a cover bolt on there and cannot get it to start threading. This hole is located (looking from left side of the bike) at the top left of the cover almost right behind the frame slider. Also there’s a lot of gasket maker someone put in when putting the cover on and that may be keeping me from starting that bolt but I don’t know. Is there something I’m missing or should know?

  2. A picture might help identify it.

  3. @Neight as Derek says, it would be much easier to get some advice if you can take a picture of the area that you mean.
    Also - welcome.

  4. It’s the hole on left. While running I can put my finger in the hole and feel suction.

  5. The parts diagram shows a 'special screw' (item 12) which another screw (17) screws into securing the 'fairlead' (24) with a washer (15). The fairlead is just a wire clip to secure wires or maybe breather tubes.

  6. Thank you

  7. In the meantime you could install a suitable length allen head bolt to plug the hole.

  8. Sounds like a previous owner has stripped the thread and bodged a repair. Next time the case is off, a stainless steel thread insert is an easy DIY and permanent fix. Andy
