Hyperstrada 821 Error Code

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by garyjaffa, Sep 26, 2020.

  1. Hi,
I own a 2013 Hyperstrada 821, sometimes when I try to start it the dash shows a error code and the start button doesn't work! If i turn the ignition on and off a few times the error code doesn't illuminate and the bike starts and runs perfectly all day until you stop for a while and it happens again. The dash does show the bike needs a oil change but this has been done so it seems to be just counting down until the next service is due, any advise would be appreciated.

  2. What is the error code?

Did you do the oil change or a dealer? If the latter they should have reset the countdown and removed the oil service indicator.

  3. The oil change was done by a dealer before I purchased the bike which was back in January.
    Thanks

  4. I believe, but stand to be corrected, that some service indicators cannot be extinguished unless they have appeared. eg if the service light is set to appear at 7500km and a service is done at 7400km it will still appear 100km later, it can only be extinguished once it has become present on the dash. A simple visit back to the supplying/servicing dealer and they should clear the service indicator FOC.

If you only purchased the bike in Jan is it still under warranty? If so I’d get the supplying dealer to look at the error code and fix whatever is causing that as well.

Out of curiosity what is the error code?

  5. The bike is way out of warranty. I bought it second hand from a private seller. Bad move after selling my 1199S! I couldn't see a code number just the wording error. I'll update you if I see a number. Thanks for your help.

  6. Sorry, I thought you may have bought it off a dealer.

Does the owners handbook not show you how to interrogate the dash to reveal what the error codes are? Usually it’s some combination of pressing of buttons on the left hand switch module.

  7. On rereading your first post and doing a bit of surfing it seems you really need to interrogate the ECU/DDA to see what’s happening. So a trip to a Ducati specialist. Your avatar says Bristol, LouigiMoto is in that neck of the woods and is highly recommended.

  8. Hi.
I've managed to access the dashboard error display and it states immobiliser hence I guess why sometimes it doesn't start but either way it looks like a trip to louigimoto who incidentally carried out the major 18000 service back in 2018

  9. I'm sure I've read in some posts on here about the antennae ring that reads the key slipping down the ignition post and thus being just borderline close enough to read the key. If it can't read the key then it won't start. Whether that issue is applicable to a 2013 Hyperstrada or not I just don't know.

  10. Thank you I'll have a look through the posts.

  11. Yes, antenna slipped down in lock surround or possibly corrosion at the terminals of it's connector.

  12. Thank you. Is this something I can fix myself or is it a expensive trip to a main dealer ?

  13. I'd certainly look at myself before going to a dealer. The antenna is under the sleeve around the ignition lock. For this bike I don't know how easy it is to access. The cable from it is coloured pink and marked '9' in this diagram. Check the connector is fully home and with no corrosion. Screenshot 2020-09-28 at 10.36.44.png

  14. Thank you. I'll give it a go.

  15. Due to lockdowns etc my bike has been sat in the garage un-used. I have checked and cleaned the connectors but unfortunately this didn't fix the problem so I took the bike today to Riders (Main Ducati Dealer) They plugged the bike in to run a diagnostic check but unfortunately the bike was not talking to their PC, they tried the PC on other bikes and worked fine so they have now said for me to book the bike in and they will check everything but at £100 per hour this could work out very expensive! Any thoughts anyone ?
    Thanks Gary

  16. From experience I will try a new throttle unit and a battery or possibly start motor

  17. Sorry what do you mean by throttle unit ? I can certainly fit a new battery.
    Many thanks Gary

if you’re anywhere near Cheshire you’re certainly welcome to try my spare one

  19. Thank you but I live south of Bristol. Why would you think it's a throttle unit?
