Indicator trouble

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by salbalboa, Sep 2, 2012.

  1. I have a front side indicator not working i have tried the bulb and that is fine so just need pointing in the right direction.the rear flashes fast so thats about as far as i got has it was late on. Does anyone have a common fault procedure for this? Could it be a bad earth or what that effect them all?

    Thanks

  2. Salbalboa can you tell us what bike. Modern bikes usually use the dash to control the indicators, older ones a relay. If the rear is flashing fast then it sounds like a broken connection as the circuit is not getting the proper resistance/load.

Depending on where the bulb is earthed down it could well be a bad earth on that bulb.

Also do you have a Multimeter or even a test light? Let us know and maybe we can offer some more advice

    Thanks

  4. Hi Sal

I don't have a wiring diagram for it but I reckon the flash rate on it will be dash or cpu controlled on a bike this recent.

I think you will most likely have a connection problem at the front indicator which is not working. I assume the other side is fine and the indicators are standard. I'd start by checking the wires at the indicator or plug. One will be black or black and another colour this is most likely the earth side. Switch on the ignition and select the indicator side giving you trouble check by selecting DC voltage on the meter and with one of the meter leads onto the engine or frame and the other to the non black wire to see if you have voltage, well a on-off-on voltage (its flashing) if you do then its the earth side. If you don't then its the power side.

I honestly think this will be simply a loose connector or wire. I reckon the power will be routed from the switch to the indicator so check the switch connector is also tight.

If I can find a wiring diagram I'll chime in again, but it sounds like it shouldn't be hard to trace

  5. Thanks for your help i will take a look this weekend and let you know the out come.:)

  6. The symptoms you describe are usually blown bulb, bad earth, or loose bulb in the bulb holder.......and if the bulb holder is anything like an SS one, then that's the first place to look.....mine were that loose and corroded, I wondered how they ever worked before I had exactly the same symptoms....

....so I suggest you see if the bulb holder contacts are clean and that it holds the bulb firmly without affecting the spring loading of the contact.

  7. Not a problem. After you have had a chance to take a look come back with what you find if its still giving you trouble.

If its only on the one side its almost certainly a connection problem or maybe an earth....but nothing serious. Once you determine which wire is which on the indicator (usually the earth side wire will be going to the bulb casing and the positive feed to the bulb base) you could also try running a test wire to the frame and to the bulb as another alternative check.

The flash rate being screwed up is normal if the load is not correct (which its not because only one bulb instead of 2 is in circuit)
