Insurance For A Born Again Biker

Discussion in 'Insurance - Sponsored by Ducati Insurance' started by West Cork Paul, Aug 14, 2018.

  1. Can anyone in Ireland make a suggestion as to where I can get insurance from please?
I've had a full licence since 1978, been riding and insuring bikes (claim free) since then until 7 years ago. I tried Carole Nash Ireland (who I used to get my insurance through) only to be told they won't insure me unless I have 2 years experience and have proof of no-claims dated within the last 5 years! Duh...... I've 40 years experience but apparently I have to have been riding in the last 2 years.
I've fixed up my 1999MY 748 (which had been languishing unused for the last 7 years) and now want to ride her again.
    Thanks.

  2. Have you tried the normal comparison sites ? I just renewed, and was advised about Bemoto on here, but sadly they were a bit much due to my added extras (exhaust, quick shifter etc etc), so I went through go compare and ended up with Bikesure, who were pretty much half the nearest other quotes, but was all done through Go compare.

  3. Hiya, I'm facing exactly the same issues due to only riding on circuits for the last few years. I'm based near Geneva and I can't get any of my local places to quote despite them happily taking my money previously. I also have Uk residency and the only place I can get to consider is a specialist broker called Peter James Insurance who are quoting (1098R) £1838.19 all risk with very limited use. As this would mean registering the bike in Uk, on the track it goes. I'm 41 with a similar level of experience and claim history.
See if they will quote for business in ROI!

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  4. 1800 quid!?! At 41 years olds is fecking scandalous.

  7. Thanks but they only cover the UK. I now live in ROI.

  8. Oh, and this!

  9. I'd say you're gonna have to bend over mate. ROI is significantly worse than UK for insurance I believe. I was recently in the same boat as you (but in UK) with my V4. No chance- got quoted 8450 by MCE  Sticking to track days!

  10. FFS! 8450! And there was me about to give MCE a call. It seems there's only 5 companies in ROI provide bike insurance and the common theme seems to be 'computer says no'. 'you have to do some compulsory bike training'. I used to be an RAC/ACU trainer until they closed down the scheme!

  11. Call them! They were the only ones that would quote when I did a 'go compare' search. I packed in road riding about 8 years back so I've lost all the NCB I'd accumulated. If I started road riding again I'd have to go back to a 600cc and build it from there. Or pay silly premiums for a big bike- don't think so....

  12. And pray tell, how are you supposed to do riding training if you can’t get insurance ? Sometimes I despair of these people, they just don’t listen to what they are saying. Good luck with your search. Andy

  13. :-( buy a sub 35Kw (49bhp) bike, provided it doesn't exceed 0.2Kw/Kg (i.e can't weigh less than 175kg) and isn't derived from a restricted larger vehicle, and take some initial basic training was one suggestion. What a chore.

  14. All insurance companies / underwriters don't like covering Ducati's especially if you are getting on in years & also have no "No claims Bonus" I have 4 bikes on one policy [ones a Ducati Scrambler, so 2 Ducati's in all + 2 others] also max no claims bonus, when I bought the Ducati SSS this year the premium almost doubled, even tho' I addled hard with a manager...

  15. 'especially if you are getting on in years'
That is a matter of subjective opinion ;-) My body may be ageing but my mind stopped 21. Insurance must be the only business where you can legally discriminate and be ageist and ducati-ist.

  16. What is what ? The 1999MY 748 mention in #1 by any chance ? Andy

  17. Oh, ha ha. It's arterial blood, hence I'm sat at home on the laptop with quite a bit of my left leg missing!

  18. Erm no.... :p

  19. Well that was a bit daft.

    ;)
