I would like to get a spare alternator cover for my 748R. The last one cracked due to a main bearing failure, and although I got a replacement then, they seem thin on the ground now. I was informed, some time ago, that a 749 alternator cover would fit and that they were interchangeable. Can someone else confirm this is correct, please? My cover has the one bolt ignition pickup and having looked at the part numbers, they do use different ones, but beyond that, I cannot see any major difference apart from possibly where the alternator wire exits the casing.
Looking at the parts list they look significantly different to me.Look at the internal webbing around the outrigger bearing. I think the alternator side of the crank is completely different. 748 R 749
My 748R cover doesn't actually look like the microfiche one; it has a lot less strengthening than is depicted and it doesn't come down to the bottom of the case as is depicted. Unless of course, it was not an original cover in the first place but fitted to a different model.
