I see a few Hypers sold with this kit, and it's tempting, but I wonder if it's legal to have it on public roads? what's the general consensus here? I guess that once you tell the insurance company the premium will go thru the roof!!!
Had the same conversation yesterday on the KTM forum. It makes no difference to the insurance if it's not upping the power by more than 5%, and since most bikes are are way under the quoted figures for stock anyhow you've got plenty of space to play with!
sure but the insurance would have something to say for a piece of kit that formally specifies it should only be used on the track? my guess is that A LOT of people are just choosing to run the risk.. some even remove the tag...
Yes, agreed. I only mention because I specifically asked my insurance company if the Termis needed declaring and that was the answer. Plus MissPineapple had a bunch of aftermarket bits on her Monster when someone pulled out on her and wrote it off and she just listed all the parts during the claim. It didn't make much difference to the offered value of the bike as the insurance just low balls you anyway but it didn't cause any issues with the claim.
When I got my 996 insurance last month o put a set of termis on the policy even though I don't have them as I will have (or similar). The cost difference was peanuts. My view is call the insurance company and ask them. Don't give them any excuse not to pay out.
yes the cost difference might be small, but I am more concerned that, in the event of a crash, the insurance would then refuse to pay on the grounds of the exhaust being race use approved only.
In my opinion, and it is nothing more than that, if the insurance company could argue the modification made the crash happen, i.e. slick race tyres, then you would be in trouble all ways up but I don't see how race pipes would be a contributing factor to an accident. I would also expect that someone like Ducati Insurance would make less of an issue over the pipes than someone like Swinton. If word got out that DI did not pay out because the bike had a set of non road legal pipes imagine the customers they would lose. If you want to be sure, ask them. Ideally in an email. But race pipes on the road are illegal so don't be naughty and don't ride over the speed limit either.
As long as you've fully declared what's fitted I can't see how an insurance company could back out of a claim. I even declare my heated grips! As stated though, if you go with Ducati Insurance there shouldn't be a problem anyway.
just tried to get a quote from Ducati Ins, and interestingly the "modification page" doesn't include racing exhaust... will call them up
actually I just spoke to Ducati Ins and they are a really nice company indeed. got a good quote with termis still they couldn't confirm they can cover the bike w/full racing kit. also they require Road Angel tracker
