Is there any easy way...

  1. ... to easily set up the ignition timing on a carby SS engine??

Having 'rebuilt' my little SS's engine (installing new crank etc), the only thing preventing it from starting, I suspect, is the damned ignition timing and it's been really bugging me! The cam timing is pretty much untouched, lining up all the dots as before...

I don't have all the TDC guages that garages do, so was wondering if there's a simpler way to do it without shelling out for my local bike shop to do it, or just buying a new engine! I thought rebuilding it would be fun, and it was until it came to bloody electrickery!

It has a good strong spark, and good compression (a friend tested that part for me). I should have photographed how the flywheel / pickups etc came off, but i ripped it apart 2 years ago and didn't think at the time!

I would copy the set up of my 750, but that went a few weeks back and I miss road bikes already, so please help me ressurect my 600!

    Any help is appreciated,

    Many Thanks,

    Ben

  2. Take a plug out and poke a stick down the hole. You can easily find TDC. Remove stick after. As the manual would say - "reverse the installation procedure".

  3. I got that far, but not sure at which point i should have it ignite?

  4. The 97 SS Owners Handbook which seems to cover 900, 750 and 600 has the Auto Advance at from 0-1700 rpm (+/- 200rpm) @ 6 degrees and 1700 - 2600 (+/- 300)...progressive up to 32 degrees (check with strobe light).

I assume that is 6 BTDC which sounds like a good starting point.

However, got this from the earlier 900 workshop manual.......Hope it helps....

  5. Thanks ever so much! That diagram should help loads! I will update my progress as I go along :)

  6. It lives! well... almost.. i think it is low on compression as if I put it into gear i can roll it around with a bit of resistance! so, with that in mind, I am now going o investigate that!
    Thanks for your help :)

  7. Which gears Ben?

    AL

  8. All gears, 1st is the easiest to push it in though!
The 750 did it when it had low compression, hence why I suspect that's the issue!

  9. Sounds like it, although 1st should be hardest.......is your valve timing out a bit?

Have you got a comp tester?

    AL

  10. It could be! I'm just messing around with it learning as I go! (I figured it's the best way to learn!)
I will check it tomorrow, though all the little dots line up perfectly with each other (on both sides of the engine)?

  11. If you need a comp tester and your Pa is this way, let me know....

    AL

  12. Thanks Al! you're a great help as always :) I appreciate it :)

  13. You can only borrow it though..........

  14. If valve timing is okay, what about valve clearance?

  15. One assumes the clearances would be okay, as they were checked only 200miles before the bottom end of the engine went kaput? but again, another suggestion i will take on board and explore :) This is, as i say, a learning experience so I thank you all for your suggestions!
