Ist Generation 1200 Multistrada Wheel Sensor Question

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Android853sp, Aug 5, 2021.

  1. My dash is displaying ‘DTC off’ and the ABS triangular warning light is on. In set up, the DTC is still showing as ‘on’ and if you turn the ABS off and then restart the bike, the message and light go off over 5mph but come back on having travelled about 400 yards. I’ve removed, cleaned and refitted both wheel sensors and checked the wiring as far as I can see. I suspect one of the wheel sensors has failed so the question is; does the Multistrada use the output from one of the two wheel sensors to display speed and if so, which one ? Ta, Andy

  2. Thank you Derek. Have a nasty suspicion the fault is intermittent but MR are shimming my forks on Monday and have said they will look at the problem. Andy

  3. Having now read your earlier thread, that area will be my first port of call :upyeah: Andy

  4. On inspection, it is apparent that MR have at some time in the past, already addressed the tie wrapped loop in the cable. Mmmm, going to check the phonic ring gaps now. Andy

  5. So to close this out, 2 of the 4 rear phonic ring securing bolts were not just loose but nearly completely undone. Problem resolved but advised to look at the rear disc and rear phonic ring bolts routinely. Usually part of the 15,000 mile service but will now mark the bolt heads with yellow paint to aid a quick visual every time I change tyres. Andy

  6. Can you throw a image or two up about these phonic ring bolts?

  7. The bike is currently getting the Ohlins fork cartridges shimmed but happy to crawl around and get a picture or 2 when I get home :upyeah: Andy

  9. Good that you got to the bottom of and an easy fix. Interesting that the loose phonic ring upset the ABS and hence the traction control but the speedo still worked.

  10. Cheers @Android853sp my rear was dinged from a mechanic changing the tyre a while back. Had to carefully ding/peen it back into a spherical shape now that I know that part's actual name!

  11. I guess the ABS/DTC is looking for minor differences between what the two sensors are reading but the speedo just wants a signal. Pleased it is a simple fix and caught just in time before a bolt head struck a bracket. Disappointed in myself because I checked the sensor/phonic ring air gap and failed to notice the loose bolts. Where is the face palm emoji when you need it ? Andy

  12. And, unsurprisingly, bloody expensive. Andy

  13. I've got spare one in the garage if anyone ever needs one.
